Gabriel Grovlez
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Gabriel Grovlez (1879-1944) was a conductor and composer. He was also a music critic for various newspapers and periodicals. He studied at the Conservatoire de Paris with Lavignac, Gédalge, and Fauré. For ten years he taught piano at the Paris Schola Cantorum. The Opéra-Comique hired him on as director of singing in 1905. His conducting career also took him to other venues in Paris in addition to Lisbon, Chicago, and other locations.
From 1914 to 1933 he conducted at the Palais Garnier. For the next four years he worked in Monte Carlo then returned to Paris to teach chamber music at the Conservatoire in 1939.
All evidence indicates Grovlez was a well-trained and very fine musician who contributed much to the musical life. He helped to edit the works of Jean-Philippe Rameau and arranged Maurice Ravel's L'Heure espagnole for small orchestra. His compositions, however, have never gained much renown.
