2008-04-10 23:13 < TheWeasel_> I've never seen it though
2008-04-10 23:13 < NoPegs> Me either, thats why I always wondered...
2008-04-10 23:14 < NoPegs> Ironically enough I hung it black on left from the start... Must be genetic memory or something... :)
2008-04-10 23:14 < Mike_H> TheWeasel_: Can you explain the ostalgie thing again?
2008-04-10 23:14 < Mike_H> Why would they want to go back to that?
2008-04-10 23:14 < TheWeasel_> Because it was a comfortable place unless you were critical.
2008-04-10 23:14 < TheWeasel_> you never had to take care of yourself.
2008-04-10 23:14 < NoPegs> Then again it is hung the same way the american flag is hung vertically... stars on upper left... maybe I did it out fo force of habit...
2008-04-10 23:14 < Mike_H> So it was comfortable place if you had no thoughts.
2008-04-10 23:14 < TheWeasel_> (or rather: rarely)
2008-04-10 23:15 < TheWeasel_> Yes.
2008-04-10 23:15 < TheWeasel_> in the big things
2008-04-10 23:15 < TheWeasel_> it was exhausting in small ways, long queus, no material
2008-04-10 23:15 < TheWeasel_> but the big things weren't your concern
2008-04-10 23:15 < TheWeasel_> and plus there's pride
2008-04-10 23:15 < TheWeasel_> East Germany got culturally conquered
2008-04-10 23:15 < NoPegs> To saythe least... :(
2008-04-10 23:15 < TheWeasel_> and there was a backlash against that
2008-04-10 23:16 < TheWeasel_> because those people had been working for the last 40 years for something that was devalued in the course of one.
2008-04-10 23:16 * DerSchwamm pours on the German pride... :)
2008-04-10 23:17 < TheWeasel_> and there was a deal of defiance.
2008-04-10 23:17 * TheWeasel_ gets wet
2008-04-10 23:18 < Mike_H> TheWeasel_: I just don't see why some of the things from back then would be desirable to have anyway.
2008-04-10 23:18 < Mike_H> Like, I read that people can buy old DDR1 programming on DVD now.
2008-04-10 23:18 < TheWeasel_> because they were *yours*
2008-04-10 23:18 < Mike_H> Why would you even want that?
2008-04-10 23:18 < DerSchwamm> Hmm, So, if I somehow acquired a genuine GDR flag, I think I'd still be tempted to cut the emblem out of it... Just on pride...
2008-04-10 23:18 < TheWeasel_> and people laugh at them suddenly.
2008-04-10 23:18 < TheWeasel_> and you worked fairly hard for them.
2008-04-10 23:18 < TheWeasel_> It's just defiance.
2008-04-10 23:19 < TheWeasel_> you're ready to completely ignore the bad sides.
2008-04-10 23:19 * DerSchwamm ponders SECAM to PAL conversion... :)
2008-04-10 23:19 < TheWeasel_> the French don't :-P
2008-04-10 23:19 < TheWeasel_> (I think)
2008-04-10 23:19 < DerSchwamm> they're DVB now aren't they anyway?
2008-04-10 23:20 < TheWeasel_> Mostly, but I still can't get Eurosport in my part of Vorpommern/northeastern Brandenburg
2008-04-10 23:20 < TheWeasel_> :-D
2008-04-10 23:20 < DerSchwamm> Could be worse, the 805 line WW2 era german standard could have taken hold... :)
2008-04-10 23:20 < TheWeasel_> not that I'm there now.
2008-04-10 23:20 < TheWeasel_> Yea. Or smoke signal packet transfer
2008-04-10 23:20 < TheWeasel_> :-D
2008-04-10 23:21 < DerSchwamm> its kinda funny, we're just now getting back up to the "800+" horizontal resolution line standards again, 70 years on. :)
2008-04-10 23:21 < DerSchwamm> course ours are in beautiful color...
2008-04-10 23:22 < TheWeasel_> until the next snowstorm
2008-04-10 23:22 < TheWeasel_> :-D
2008-04-10 23:23 < Mike_H> TheWeasel_: http://www.ddr-fotos.de/ddr_40.htm
2008-04-10 23:23 < Mike_H> What does "jugendweihe" mean?
2008-04-10 23:23 < Mike_H> I'm assuming "mode" means what it means in French too
2008-04-10 23:23 < TheWeasel_> it's like confirmation for atheists.
2008-04-10 23:23 < TheWeasel_> it does
2008-04-10 23:23 < Mike_H> At a fashion show?
2008-04-10 23:23 < TheWeasel_> no
2008-04-10 23:23 < TheWeasel_> wait
2008-04-10 23:24 < TheWeasel_> there was a central event were people had this "you're an adult now" ritual
2008-04-10 23:24 < TheWeasel_> and there seems to have been a fashion show on the side
2008-04-10 23:24 < Mike_H> oh, okayt
2008-04-10 23:24 < Mike_H> *okay
2008-04-10 23:24 < DerSchwamm> Like a batmitzvah?
2008-04-10 23:24 < TheWeasel_> there were certain more liberal halfyears
2008-04-10 23:25 < TheWeasel_> later than bar mitzvah
2008-04-10 23:25 < TheWeasel_> I think people are 16 or so
2008-04-10 23:25 < TheWeasel_> I dont know
2008-04-10 23:25 < TheWeasel_> oh, 14 after all
2008-04-10 23:25 < TheWeasel_> so yes, bar mitzvah without being a Jew
2008-04-10 23:25 < TheWeasel_> :-D
2008-04-10 23:25 < TheWeasel_> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jugendweihe
2008-04-10 23:26 < TheWeasel_> it's basically an atheist alternative to the church rites
2008-04-10 23:26 < TheWeasel_> confirmation/holy communion
2008-04-10 23:28 < TheWeasel_> it's still done, mostly by far-left youth organizations
2008-04-10 23:28 < Mike_H> TheWeasel_: There's an article en. doesn't have
2008-04-10 23:28 < Mike_H> and I think is fascinating and should get its own
2008-04-10 23:28 < TheWeasel_> Pa'don?
2008-04-10 23:28 < TheWeasel_> Oh
2008-04-10 23:28 < Mike_H> Weltzeituhr
2008-04-10 23:28 < TheWeasel_> Oh!
2008-04-10 23:28 < Mike_H> you know
2008-04-10 23:28 < TheWeasel_> :-d
2008-04-10 23:28 < Mike_H> that clock thing
2008-04-10 23:29 < Krimpet> apparently some non-Jewish people actually hold "faux mitzvahs" for their kids, complete with imitation rituals, just to give their kid a fancy birthday party -_-
2008-04-10 23:29 < TheWeasel_> I'll translate that tomorrow if you like
2008-04-10 23:29 < Mike_H> TheWeasel_: Currently it's only a section on Alexanderplatz on de
2008-04-10 23:29 < Mike_H> but I think it needs its own article on en
2008-04-10 23:29 < TheWeasel_> is it linked from anywhere?
2008-04-10 23:29 < Mike_H> what do you mean
2008-04-10 23:29 < Mike_H> oh
2008-04-10 23:29 < Mike_H> on en
2008-04-10 23:29 < Mike_H> let me check
2008-04-10 23:30 < Krimpet> "The bar mitzvah, or at least its lavish celebration, is being co-opted by non-Jewish kids who want to have killer 13th birthday parties."
2008-04-10 23:30 < TheWeasel_> only the Brunnen der Völkerfreundschaft is redlinked
2008-04-10 23:30 < Mike_H> TheWeasel_: It's currently a redirect to "world clock."
2008-04-10 23:30 < TheWeasel_> Krimpet: Gotta love postmodernism.
2008-04-10 23:30 < Mike_H> I think it needs its own article, talking specifically about that clock, the construction, etc.
2008-04-10 23:30 < TheWeasel_> I can't provide that, I have zero engineering knowledge.
2008-04-10 23:30 < Mike_H> TheWeasel_: Surely it's already written about on de
2008-04-10 23:31 < Mike_H> all that's needed is translation
2008-04-10 23:31 < NoPegs> is it a non standard clock? I'm still wrpping my mind around the root words...
2008-04-10 23:31 < TheWeasel_> German section's rather short
2008-04-10 23:31 < Mike_H> and maybe extra paragraphs or two with another source
2008-04-10 23:31 < TheWeasel_> there's no comment on how it actually works
2008-04-10 23:31 < Mike_H> NoPegs: "Welt" = world
2008-04-10 23:31 < TheWeasel_> NoPegs: http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bild:Berlin_-_Weltzeituhr.jpg
2008-04-10 23:31 * NoPegs sticks with the sundial and sextant... :)
2008-04-10 23:32 < Mike_H> "zeitzonen" = time zone
2008-04-10 23:32 < TheWeasel_> it displays all timezones simultaneously
2008-04-10 23:32 < Mike_H> "uhren" = clock
2008-04-10 23:32 < TheWeasel_> and it's pretty damn hideous, but that's just me
2008-04-10 23:32 < NoPegs> right.
2008-04-10 23:33 < NoPegs> I was trying to visualize it in my mind... :)
2008-04-10 23:33 < TheWeasel_> it's basically just a description of how it came to stand there, then the measurements and materials, then the further history
2008-04-10 23:33 < NoPegs> I was thinking something like our American Doomsday-Clock...
2008-04-10 23:34 < Mike_H> TheWeasel_: What stuck out to me are the cities labeled on it
2008-04-10 23:34 < Mike_H> like an en article could have a little table of what's on each slab
2008-04-10 23:34 < TheWeasel_> yep.
2008-04-10 23:34 < TheWeasel_> I'd need someone table-savvy to help me
2008-04-10 23:34 < Mike_H> UTC -5 "Montreal, Washington, New York, Havanna, etc"
2008-04-10 23:34 < Mike_H> I find it funny how you spell some of those cities in German
2008-04-10 23:34 < Mike_H> Mexico-Stadt
2008-04-10 23:34 < Mike_H> er
2008-04-10 23:34 < Mike_H> Mexiko-Stadt
2008-04-10 23:34 * NoPegs notes there's no provision for Daylight Savings Time... :)
2008-04-10 23:35 < TheWeasel_> that's cromulent.
2008-04-10 23:35 < TheWeasel_> yea, it's probably behind the time now too since some places changed
2008-04-10 23:35 < NoPegs> well the way thats spelled is a better pronunciation of american mexico versus me-hee-ko :)
2008-04-10 23:35 < Mike_H> NoPegs: Since they go by the hour, some of the slabs have to say things like
2008-04-10 23:35 < Mike_H> Rangun +30
2008-04-10 23:35 < Mike_H> New Delhi +30
2008-04-10 23:35 < NoPegs> yep...
2008-04-10 23:36 < TheWeasel_> India is +4:30 in toto
2008-04-10 23:36 < Mike_H> TheWeasel_: Is there no y in German?
2008-04-10 23:36 < Mike_H> I notice one slab says "Pjongjang"
2008-04-10 23:36 < NoPegs> yep.
2008-04-10 23:37 < Mike_H> well, the o has an umlaut
2008-04-10 23:37 < NoPegs> umlauts render the need for Y false.
2008-04-10 23:37 < Mike_H> I just can't type it
2008-04-10 23:37 < TheWeasel_> j = y as a consonant in German
2008-04-10 23:37 < TheWeasel_> Y exists though
2008-04-10 23:37 < NoPegs> ß ü
2008-04-10 23:37 < TheWeasel_> mostly in foreign words
2008-04-10 23:37 < NoPegs> bah.
2008-04-10 23:37 * NoPegs can't remember the alt+ XXXX code for umlauted o.
2008-04-10 23:37 < TheWeasel_> it used to be used in double consonants in lieu of "i"
2008-04-10 23:37 < TheWeasel_> no longer though
2008-04-10 23:38 < TheWeasel_> Polizey (police) used to be spelt Policey
2008-04-10 23:38 * NoPegs kind of liked the eszet.. ß
2008-04-10 23:38 < TheWeasel_> *double vowels
2008-04-10 23:38 < NoPegs> straße!
2008-04-10 23:38 < TheWeasel_> *POLIZEI
2008-04-10 23:38 < TheWeasel_> MAN I CAN'T SPELL
2008-04-10 23:38 < TheWeasel_> Straßenpolizei!
2008-04-10 23:38 * TheWeasel_ wonders what the shortest word with all umlauts and ß is
2008-04-10 23:38 < NoPegs> TheWeasel_: At least you can't spell in either language. :P
2008-04-10 23:39 < TheWeasel_> Yea, equal time :-D
2008-04-10 23:39 < Krimpet> p̃
2008-04-10 23:39 < TheWeasel_> Heißbörsenüberfälle
2008-04-10 23:40 < TheWeasel_> okay, so the ß word sounds sort of forced
2008-04-10 23:40 < TheWeasel_> "hot stock market assaults"
2008-04-10 23:40 * NoPegs ponders [[Buffalo buffalo Buffalo buffalo buffalo buffalo Buffalo buffalo]]
2008-04-10 23:40 < NoPegs> yes, real article...
2008-04-10 23:41 < TheWeasel_> Most people have trouble with the five-word sentence
2008-04-10 23:41 < TheWeasel_> But I've never in my life encountered anyone who used "to buffalo", except in this sentence.
2008-04-10 23:42 * NoPegs liked the mensa test question that asked you to use the word and 5 times ina row in a sentence... Gramatically correct..
2008-04-10 23:42 < Fennec> do you get quotes?
2008-04-10 23:42 < NoPegs> No...
2008-04-10 23:43 * TheWeasel_ thinks it means something like "Bisons from upstate New York who get harrassed by bisons from upstate New York in turn harrass bisons from upstate New York"
2008-04-10 23:43 < NoPegs> "That sign looks good, but put more space between roberts and(1) and (2) and(3) and(4) and(5) sons...
2008-04-10 23:43 < TheWeasel_> but I could be wrong
2008-04-10 23:43 < NoPegs> read the article, there's like 15 different defintions for buffalo.
2008-04-10 23:44 < NoPegs> I'm not a linguist though... :(
2008-04-10 23:44 < TheWeasel_> the English word with the most definitions is "set", or so I've read
2008-04-10 23:45 < Krimpet> I don't understand the supposed implicit "whom" between the second and third "buffalo"
2008-04-10 23:46 < TheWeasel_> it would usually take a gerund, I agree
2008-04-10 23:46 < TheWeasel_> "the bisons harassing me"
2008-04-10 23:46 < Fennec> consider a phrase such as "the cakes Mom bakes"
2008-04-10 23:47 < Krimpet> hmm
2008-04-10 23:47 < TheWeasel_> fair enough.
2008-04-10 23:47 < TheWeasel_> I take that back :-D
2008-04-10 23:47 < Rinn> Set sets set Set sets.
2008-04-10 23:48 < TheWeasel_> Wenn hinter Fliegen Fliegen fliegen, fliegen Fliegen Fliegen nach.
2008-04-10 23:48 < Rinn> I wonder how long I could go with that.
2008-04-10 23:49 < TheWeasel_> ...or "hinterher" if you're younger
2008-04-10 23:50 < TheWeasel_> Oh that behind fly fly fly!
2008-04-10 23:50 < TheWeasel_> Okay, there's no way "fly" can ever be plural
2008-04-10 23:50 < Ceiling_Cat> TheWeasel_ - you are insuffeciently feline
2008-04-10 23:50 < Ceiling_Cat> You must be <----- this feline -----> to chat in the channel
2008-04-10 23:50 < Krimpet> [[James while John had had had had had had had had had had had a better effect on the teacher]] o_O
2008-04-10 23:50 < NoPegs> a tent with two rain fly in england!
2008-04-10 23:50 < Gambit> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WMSinyx_Ab0 << wikipedia documentary "The Truth According To Wikipedia" ^_^
2008-04-10 23:50 < TheWeasel_> German has the nice coincidence that the common verb ending converges with the common plural ending, so it works.
2008-04-10 23:51 < ThePolecat> you know, the yellow polecat odd bikini
2008-04-10 23:51 < Ceiling_Cat> Much better
2008-04-10 23:51 < NoPegs> *ba-dum-tisssh!*

2008-04-10 23:52 < Rinn> Set sets Sets' sets set set set set Set sets set.
2008-04-10 23:52 < ThePolecat> in German, even harmless words like "Schichtkäse" drive people into insanity.
2008-04-10 23:52 < Rinn> Set's*
2008-04-10 23:53 < Lucifer_Cat> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Buffalo_sentence_1_parse_tree.svg <------ Epic lulz
2008-04-10 23:53 * ThePolecat likes "Es klapperten die Klapperschlangen, bis ihre Klappern schlapper klangen"
2008-04-10 23:53 < Lucifer_Cat> Weasel: Why the insanity?
2008-04-10 23:54 < ThePolecat> The rattlesnakes rattled till their rattles sounded whacker
2008-04-10 23:54 < ThePolecat> I don't know? I just like pain?
2008-04-10 23:54 * NoPegs didn't think there were rattlesnakes in Germany... :P
2008-04-10 23:54 < Lucifer_Cat> "in German, even harmless words like "Schichtkäse" drive people into insanity."
2008-04-10 23:54 * NoPegs thought rattlers were a US and AU thing...
2008-04-10 23:54 < Lucifer_Cat> thats what i was talkin bout
2008-04-10 23:55 < ThePolecat> because people can't say "Schicht" or even "schlecht"
2008-04-10 23:55 * ThePolecat 's favorite tongue twister is a very simple one
2008-04-10 23:55 < ThePolecat> "Die Katze tritt die Treppe krumm"
2008-04-10 23:55 < Lucifer_Cat> that sounds a lot like "shit case"
2008-04-10 23:55 < ThePolecat> "The cat warps the stairs by stepping on them"
2008-04-10 23:55 < ThePolecat> or something
2008-04-10 23:56 < NoPegs> Scheiß?
2008-04-10 23:56 < ThePolecat> Scheißkäse
2008-04-10 23:56 < Lucifer_Cat> MEOW!!!!
2008-04-10 23:56 * Lucifer_Cat warps the universe by being in it.
2008-04-10 23:56 < ThePolecat> those Eurocrats would probably disapprove of our traditional poo-method of cheesemaking
2008-04-10 23:57 < ThePolecat> it's people against a snobby elitist class that doesn't even allow excrements in cheese any more!
2008-04-10 23:57 < ThePolecat> >.<
2008-04-10 23:57 < ThePolecat> never mind.
2008-04-10 23:57 < NoPegs> Thank god they were never allowed in Beer...
2008-04-10 23:57 < ThePolecat> yea, the Reinheitsgebot
2008-04-10 23:58 < ThePolecat> back in the days, when apple juice was still allowed...
2008-04-10 23:58 < Lucifer_Cat> anyone here use "Wesabe"?

2008-04-10 23:59 < ThePolecat> I'm not a smartass, I'm just guessing
2008-04-10 23:59 < ThePolecat> Pa'don?
2008-04-11 00:00 * ThePolecat chuckles at the overuse of the word "Uber" in English
2008-04-11 00:00 < Lucifer_Cat> ThePolecat: you ARE a smartass. just that you were not being one at that time.
2008-04-11 00:00 < ThePolecat> or should I say Uberuse
2008-04-11 00:00 < Rinn> Sod sod sods sods' sod.

2008-04-11 00:01 < ThePolecat> yay for random aggression.
2008-04-11 00:01 < ThePolecat> I'm off to bed.
2008-04-11 00:01 < ThePolecat> later
2008-04-11 00:01 < NoPegs> FTW!
2008-04-11 00:01 < NoPegs> =)
2008-04-11 00:02 < ThePolecat> make of zat vat you vill
2008-04-11 00:02 < ThePolecat> Bbl
2008-04-11 00:03 < Ceiling_Cat> MAOR KATZ!
2008-04-11 00:04 < Lucifer_Cat> roar?
2008-04-11 00:04 < Lucifer_Cat> nope
2008-04-11 00:04 < Rinn> Set Set sets set Set's sets set set set set Set sets set.
2008-04-11 00:04 < Lucifer_Cat> MEOW!!
2008-04-11 00:04 < Lucifer_Cat> got it!
2008-04-11 00:04 * Ceiling_Cat is watching Mr. Cartmenez
2008-04-11 00:05 * Lucifer_Cat is watching Eric Cartman
2008-04-11 00:05 * Lucifer_Cat sets Rinn off
2008-04-11 00:05 < Rinn> I'm pretty much just copying "Buffalo buffalo Buffalo buffalo buffalo buffalo Buffalo buffalo" at this point.
2008-04-11 00:06 < Lucifer_Cat> Rinn: <Chauvinist/offensive question suppressed>
2008-04-11 00:08 < Ceiling_Cat> Fewer Buffalo
2008-04-11 00:08 < Ceiling_Cat> MAOR KATZ!
2008-04-11 00:08 < Rinn> Set Set's Set sets set Set's Set sets set set set set Set's Set sets set.
2008-04-11 00:09 < vIkSiT> hi all
2008-04-11 00:09 < Rinn> I think that's it.
2008-04-11 00:09 < vIkSiT> is there a way to get just a list of categories from wikipedia?
2008-04-11 00:09 < vIkSiT> special:Export doesn't seem to work on a category page since they don't have any wiki markup
2008-04-11 00:09 < vIkSiT> i was wondering what the alternative would be?
2008-04-11 00:10 < tobago> does the mIRC trial ever expire?
2008-04-11 00:10 < Gambit> yeah O_O
2008-04-11 00:10 < Rinn> Does Set count as a different word, though?
2008-04-11 00:11 < Fennec> tobago: X-Chat.
2008-04-11 00:11 < tobago> i want to buy it, but it doesnt seem to expire
2008-04-11 00:11 < tobago> it just makes me wait
2008-04-11 00:11 < Rinn> It expires, but it doesn't lock you out or anything.
2008-04-11 00:11 < tobago> oh. damn
2008-04-11 00:11 < Rinn> It just gives you the screen where you can play with the guy's nose.
2008-04-11 00:12 < tobago> yum
2008-04-11 00:14 < tobago> anyone ever come up with a percentage as to how far wikipedia is from being complete?
2008-04-11 00:14 < tobago> like a thermometer
2008-04-11 00:14 < Fennec> tobago: 0%?
2008-04-11 00:14 < tobago> no way
2008-04-11 00:14 < tobago> i mean the highest it could ever be is 99
2008-04-11 00:14 < tobago> but gotta be pretty far along
2008-04-11 00:15 < The359> uh
2008-04-11 00:15 < The359> what exactly is 100%?
2008-04-11 00:15 < Rinn> It depends on whether the deletionists or the inclusionists win.
2008-04-11 00:15 < gwern> tobago: by some estimates, a reasonable goal is ~1-3oo million
2008-04-11 00:15 < tobago> 300 million articles?
2008-04-11 00:16 < gwern> [[User:Piotrus/Wikipedia interwiki and specialized knowledge test]]: 'There are about 2 millions articles in need of translation from non-English Wikipedias, and more then 400 million of specialized topics in need of creation. Wikipedia is just in its infancy...'
2008-04-11 00:17 < Greentryst> the sum of human knowledge is immeasurable and constantly increasing
2008-04-11 00:18 < tobago> hmm. if its the sum of human knowledge, then i dont see where deletionists get their stance from
2008-04-11 00:18 < Rinn> But is Wikipedia supposed to record all human knowledge, or only a part of it?
2008-04-11 00:18 < Rinn> If it's only a part, it can be quantified.
2008-04-11 00:18 < Golbez> tobago- because some things aren't worthy of being part of the sum of human knowledge
2008-04-11 00:19 < gwern> deletionists are ashamed of humanity
2008-04-11 00:19 < Golbez> what was the short story about a library that contained every piece of information known to man, but was completely useless because, since it was so big, it was impossible to find anything in it? we have to prevent that.
2008-04-11 00:19 < Golbez> we don't want an article about you, your dog, or your school's chess team.
2008-04-11 00:19 < pengo> what's an animal cats chase, starting with W?
2008-04-11 00:20 < Greentryst> well, let's take an irrelevant if not downright deceitful example of mine: we have more information about Sonic the Hedgehog than about a man who created a mass market medical respirator
2008-04-11 00:20 < Golbez> unless it beat bobby fisher.
2008-04-11 00:20 < Rinn> Wombats?
2008-04-11 00:20 < Golbez> Greentryst- that's simply a matter of personal priority and not a failing of the project as a whole
2008-04-11 00:20 < Rinn> Greentryst: So?
2008-04-11 00:20 < gwern> wren?
2008-04-11 00:20 < Greentryst> note my qualifiers. :)
2008-04-11 00:20 < tobago> nah, there can be a universal scale of notability
2008-04-11 00:20 < pengo> wombats are bigger than cats
2008-04-11 00:21 < tobago> sonic the hedgehog is very notable to a few, but gravity is or should be very notable to all
2008-04-11 00:21 < Rinn> Maybe it's a really dumb cut.
2008-04-11 00:21 < Rinn> cat
2008-04-11 00:21 < Greentryst> my point is that the value of particular knowledge is difficult if not dangerous to try to balance
2008-04-11 00:21 < pengo> Rinn: maybe it is.. maybe it is.
2008-04-11 00:21 < tobago> then you let the encyclopedia manage itself and the more important articles will accumulate more content
2008-04-11 00:22 < tobago> hopefully
2008-04-11 00:22 < tobago> (not really)
2008-04-11 00:22 < gwern> pengo: what's wrong with wren?
2008-04-11 00:22 < gwern> (hee hee)
2008-04-11 00:22 < Rinn> You'll probably end up with a bunch of info on memes and pop culture.
2008-04-11 00:23 < Greentryst> I rather like everything2's idea of "quests" to take useful but potentially obscure topics and create writeups about them
2008-04-11 00:24 < gwern> I wish we had the everything2 softlinks
2008-04-11 00:24 < gwern> they're much better than see alsos
2008-04-11 00:24 < Greentryst> heh, those are a very strange beast
2008-04-11 00:26 < gwern> Greentryst: everything2 needs social controls because of all the non-serious names you can force softlinks to point to, but that'd not be a problem with WP
2008-04-11 00:26 < Greentryst> indeed, or overused sarcastic ones like "Your radical ideas about X have already occurred to others"
2008-04-11 00:26 < gwern> Greentryst: that is oft appropriate - but your point is taken
2008-04-11 00:26 < Greentryst> heh, that is true
2008-04-11 00:27 * Lucifer_Cat googles for Green Tree St.
2008-04-11 00:27 < pengo> gwern: it's not punny enough.. doesn't matter
2008-04-11 00:28 < Lucifer_Cat> if it aint punny enough, it aint funny enough.
2008-04-11 00:29 < pengo> exactly, lucifer cat
2008-04-11 00:29 < gwern> pengo: well, unless you can think of some other avid or critter which cats eat and starts with w...
2008-04-11 00:29 * gwern sees no better solutions
2008-04-11 00:29 < NoPegs> weevil!
2008-04-11 00:29 < pengo> oooh
2008-04-11 00:29 < pengo> go no pegs
2008-04-11 00:30 < gwern> I've never heard of a cat eating weevils
2008-04-11 00:30 * NoPegs has seen many cats eating bugs. :P
2008-04-11 00:30 < pengo> whose name is remarkly similra to pengos
2008-04-11 00:30 < NoPegs> Mine is anagram of Sponge cause Sponge is already taken as a regged nick here..
2008-04-11 00:30 < gwern> as well say 'worms'
2008-04-11 00:30 < pengo> and sponge is an anagram of pengos
2008-04-11 00:30 < NoPegs> lol.
2008-04-11 00:31 < pengo> oh. worms works too.
2008-04-11 00:31 < Lucifer_Cat> pegnos

2008-04-11 00:31 < pengo> i was just after a caption for my photo.. http://www.flickr.com/photos/pengo-au/2404164383/
2008-04-11 00:32 < The359> wtf
2008-04-11 00:32 < The359> Citizens of Monaco are legally not allowed to enter the Monte Carlo Casino
2008-04-11 00:32 < pengo> cause they're too poor?
2008-04-11 00:34 < The359> I wonder if that includes dual citizens
2008-04-11 00:43 < Lucifer_Cat> The359: if so, then there would hardly be any people in the casino
2008-04-11 00:44 < Lucifer_Cat> i guess the only non-dual citizens of monaco are the housekeepers.
2008-04-11 00:44 < Lucifer_Cat> and they dont let them in cuz theyre poor and reduce the coolness of the casino
2008-04-11 00:45 < Lucifer_Cat> PegNos
2008-04-11 00:45 < Lucifer_Cat> Ceiling_Cat: http://kuvaton.com/kuvei/ceiling_cat_is_watching_you.jpg
2008-04-11 00:45 < tobago> i dont think anyone in monacos poor
2008-04-11 00:52 * Ceiling_Cat is genuinely tired
2008-04-11 00:53 < Ceiling_Cat> But I got some great news today
2008-04-11 00:53 < NoPegs> oh?
2008-04-11 00:53 < Ceiling_Cat> My advisor is going to do a final review of my thesis this weekend
2008-04-11 00:53 < Ceiling_Cat> if he doesn't find anything really bad, he'll sign it monday
2008-04-11 00:53 < Lucifer_Cat> http://www.flickr.com/photos/garagenoise/2363630684/in/photostream/
2008-04-11 00:53 < Ceiling_Cat> (that's why I'm working so very, very hard tonight)
2008-04-11 00:54 < Lucifer_Cat> Ceiling_Cat: you said tht already
2008-04-11 00:54 < pengo> very hard indeed
2008-04-11 00:54 < Liempt> Hard?
2008-04-11 00:54 < Liempt> Like a pen. . . is that you, pengo?
2008-04-11 00:55 < Worldcruft> Muuuuusic makes the peeeeeeeeeeople come togeeeeeeeeeeeether.... ya-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-ah!
2008-04-11 00:55 < pengo> where did my pen go?
2008-04-11 00:55 < Liempt> I dunno lol
2008-04-11 00:55 < Worldcruft> Red links blue!
2008-04-11 00:56 < Worldcruft> I agree! Even if I have to drink pounds and pounds of expresso!
2008-04-11 00:56 < HFactor> is there any GTK based wikipedia editor software available?
2008-04-11 00:57 < Worldcruft> I think winkipedia needs to respect lunch!
2008-04-11 00:58 < Worldcruft> They also should check theyself before they wreckity-wreck theyself
2008-04-11 00:58 < Worldcruft> Be a hero in the double zero!
2008-04-11 00:58 < NoPegs> ...
2008-04-11 00:59 < Worldcruft> I believe in the power to glean. I believe in the power to stay clean! I believe in the power to work it by the hour. Said, work work work, that big wheel, y'all.
2008-04-11 01:00 < HFactor> is there any GTK based wikipedia editor software available?
2008-04-11 01:00 < Fennec> HFactor: gtk-based? um, lessee. mozilla stuff's out then? :P
2008-04-11 01:00 < Fennec> galeon?
2008-04-11 01:00 < HFactor> whats that?
2008-04-11 01:01 < Worldcruft> I want to find a KFC based wikipedia editor. Then I can get some extra tasty crispy on, whilst I edit, yo.
2008-04-11 01:02 < Worldcruft> Go Ryan, it's ya birfday! Go starnest, itsya birfday!
2008-04-11 01:03 < pengo> what do you call these mushroom hats? http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2062/1939267567_165f0b5706.jpg
2008-04-11 01:03 < Lucifer_Cat> pengo: crappy hats
2008-04-11 01:03 < pengo> i think they rock
2008-04-11 01:03 < Worldcruft> pengo - dont know, but they are pretty. I think very becoming. she looks like a 60s air hostess
2008-04-11 01:03 < Worldcruft> gorgeous
2008-04-11 01:04 < pengo> Worldcruft: if you're into that sort of thing... it was from here: http://www.darkroastedblend.com/2007/02/glamour-of-flight.html
2008-04-11 01:04 < Worldcruft> tyvm pengo
2008-04-11 01:05 < pengo> ah she's the 2001 space odyssey hostess
2008-04-11 01:06 < Worldcruft> that makes sense, she looked familiar
2008-04-11 01:25 < HFactor> is there any GTK based wikipedia editor software available?
2008-04-11 01:25 * Gambit wishes :)
2008-04-11 01:26 * NoPegs was a fan of jedit...
2008-04-11 01:26 < NoPegs> not GTK though.
2008-04-11 01:28 < tobago> ((Tawker)) jwales: so make a sock and fix it :o
2008-04-11 01:28 < tobago> ((Tawker)) as long as it's not edit warring or anything bad, I see no problems
2008-04-11 01:28 < tobago> w/ jwales having an undisclosed sock
2008-04-11 01:28 < tobago> ((Tawker)) saves him a lot of media hell
2008-04-11 01:28 < tobago> hah wikitruth
2008-04-11 01:28 < tobago> god these logs are ancient
2008-04-11 01:28 < tawker> tobago: quotes taken out of context
2008-04-11 01:29 < tobago> well obviously
2008-04-11 01:29 < tawker> the context was taken in that it was "omg, Jimbo Wales made the edit, it must be godly"
2008-04-11 01:29 < tobago> have you read them?
2008-04-11 01:29 < tawker> they show up in the odd google alert I get
2008-04-11 01:30 < tawker> truth be told, I wish Jimmy would do most content editing as a sock
2008-04-11 01:30 < tawker> just to avoid the "we cannot overrule godking" factor
2008-04-11 01:30 < tawker> obviously, to avoid COI etc
2008-04-11 01:30 < tawker> because COI is a bad thing
2008-04-11 01:31 < tobago> he doesnt do a lot of editing does he?
2008-04-11 01:31 < HFactor> is there any GTK based wikipedia editor software available?
2008-04-11 01:31 < tawker> tobago: not really
2008-04-11 01:31 < tobago> seems like he would have been things to do
2008-04-11 01:32 < tobago> *better
2008-04-11 01:32 < tawker> Jimmy is pretty much hands off
2008-04-11 01:32 < tawker> as far as I know at least
2008-04-11 01:32 < tobago> well honestly, he has hundreds of thousands of great editors
2008-04-11 01:32 < tobago> not like he could make a dent
2008-04-11 01:33 < tawker> well, it's all about influence
2008-04-11 01:33 < tobago> does he irc a lot nowadays?
2008-04-11 01:34 < tawker> skype's more
2008-04-11 01:34 < tawker> I see him on more than I see fuzheado
2008-04-11 01:34 < tawker> which is odd
2008-04-11 01:36 < tobago> based on what i see here at wiki/wikipedia, he lost the sanger battle
2008-04-11 01:36 < miranda> Fennec: what does your bot do?
2008-04-11 01:36 < tobago> although if i were him i would throw a battle like that. carrying it on and on seems very childish even if hes right
2008-04-11 01:40 < Mark_Ryan> larry sanger's annoying
2008-04-11 01:40 < NoPegs> *dhrug*
2008-04-11 01:41 < NoPegs> **shrug*
2008-04-11 01:41 < NoPegs> haha.
2008-04-11 01:41 < NoPegs> haha. again.
2008-04-11 01:42 < rafterman> i hear jimbo was just in here!
2008-04-11 01:42 < rafterman> wow
2008-04-11 01:42 < Mark_Ryan> you really shouldn't impersonate him, even in jest
2008-04-11 01:42 * NoPegs is surprised there's not a banbot on jwales nickname...
2008-04-11 01:43 < rafterman> yeah so am i
2008-04-11 01:43 < rafterman> i didnt think it would work
2008-04-11 01:43 < rafterman> well a simple whois clears up my facade pretty quick
2008-04-11 01:44 < Mark_Ryan> yes, jimbo's too cool to live in illinois
2008-04-11 01:44 < rafterman> i have a place in st. pete, should have hopped on jwales while i was down there
2008-04-11 01:44 < rafterman> would anyone have known?
2008-04-11 01:44 < rafterman> do they know his ip?
2008-04-11 01:45 < Mark_Ryan> define 'they'
2008-04-11 01:45 < rafterman> ops
2008-04-11 01:45 < rafterman> anyone
2008-04-11 01:46 < Mark_Ryan> jimbo identifies to NickServ and gets the hostmask wikimedia/JimmyWales or something like that
2008-04-11 01:46 < nokmar> he's at bomis, I think
2008-04-11 01:46 < Gambit> yeah
2008-04-11 01:46 < Mark_Ryan> or is it wikia?
2008-04-11 01:47 < Mark_Ryan> n=jwales@wikipedia/Jimbo-Wales - nope, wikipedia. we're all wrong
2008-04-11 01:47 < Gambit> nah he is online though ^_^
2008-04-11 01:48 < tawker> nah, jwales is not online on irc
2008-04-11 01:48 < RickedRoger> Check out my ad! http://atlanta.craigslist.org/tag/638144159.html (quick before they flag!).
2008-04-11 01:48 < Gambit> yeah he is , he changed his appearance XD
2008-04-11 01:48 < rafterman> i wonder if wikipedia could be hosted by its editors and eliminate a central presence altogether
2008-04-11 01:49 < Gambit> haha XD
2008-04-11 01:49 < rafterman> the admins do all the work anyway
2008-04-11 01:49 < RickedRoger> Check out my ad! http://atlanta.craigslist.org/tag/638144159.html (quick before they flag!).
2008-04-11 01:49 < rafterman> and one of the main criticism of jimmy is he doesn't do enough to guide the project
2008-04-11 01:49 < rafterman> which he hardly wants to do anyway
2008-04-11 01:49 < pengo> doesn't do enough to guide, and doesn't piss off and let it run itself
2008-04-11 01:50 < rafterman> id say it has more than what it needs to effectively run itself
2008-04-11 01:50 < Mark_Ryan> really, he has mostly let it run itself
2008-04-11 01:50 < rafterman> but as of now its a slave to donations
2008-04-11 01:50 < pengo> i mean he still goes around declaring himself king
2008-04-11 01:51 < rafterman> because its a helluva lot of information to be hosted by one guy
2008-04-11 01:51 < pengo> but does nothing
2008-04-11 01:51 < Mark_Ryan> pengo, some would say he is a valuable resource for publicity and donation-getting
2008-04-11 01:51 < rafterman> hah nah. the worker bees can leave, the queen is their slave
2008-04-11 01:51 < rafterman> if he slighted an admin in the least
2008-04-11 01:51 < rafterman> hed be out
2008-04-11 01:51 < pengo> the publicity he generates isn't all good
2008-04-11 01:52 < nokmar> not everyone likes jimmy
2008-04-11 01:52 < rafterman> he does like the limelight. and doesnt always use it for the good of the project
2008-04-11 01:52 < nokmar> mostly the new people venerate him, but once you look at his contribs he starts to look like an ass
2008-04-11 01:53 < pengo> we need a new jimbo
2008-04-11 01:53 < NoPegs> Amen!
2008-04-11 01:53 < pengo> i nominate my cat
2008-04-11 01:53 < NoPegs> Seconded!
2008-04-11 01:53 * tawker wants a lolcat godking :D
2008-04-11 01:53 < rafterman> is this isolated dissent or a widespread feeling
2008-04-11 01:53 < Mark_Ryan> i just find it quite sad that people are now developing the attitude that jimbo's work is done and now he can piss off. he did put up the cash to start the whole thing up, it's not like he just declared himself god-king and everything went from there
2008-04-11 01:53 < pengo> rafterman: no idea
2008-04-11 01:54 < tawker> Mark_Ryan: I don't think the project should be centered on any one person
2008-04-11 01:54 < rafterman> I don't think it can, it's too big.
2008-04-11 01:54 < tawker> Mark_Ryan: because it's grown far beyond that......
2008-04-11 01:54 < Mark_Ryan> tawker: I didn't say it should be either :) I'm just criticising the sinking of the boot into jimbo all of a sudden
2008-04-11 01:54 < Mark_Ryan> the last time he tried to exert any authority over the english wikipedia he got mightily smacked down by the communmity
2008-04-11 01:54 < pengo> he's not terrible, but he's no steve jobs or linus torvalds..
2008-04-11 01:55 < tawker> honestly, Jimmy is human
2008-04-11 01:55 < pengo> tawker: yeah i'll give him that
2008-04-11 01:55 < tawker> he's not perfect... nobody is
2008-04-11 01:55 < rafterman> I don't think he was cut out to preside over a diehard bureaucracy like Wikipedia.
2008-04-11 01:56 < tawker> I don't think anyone can be
2008-04-11 01:56 < nokmar> here, let me dig up his edits
2008-04-11 01:56 < rafterman> at least hes better looking than sanger
2008-04-11 01:56 < rafterman> looks rogueish
2008-04-11 01:56 < rafterman> good for wikipedia
2008-04-11 01:56 < rafterman> the day of the socially inept nerd is past
2008-04-11 01:56 < Mark_Ryan> rafterman, heh, now that's not a very nice thing to say About Larry Sanger
2008-04-11 01:57 < tawker> Larry Sanger has given a lot to this project
2008-04-11 01:57 < Mark_Ryan> he did, tawker. then he got sick and tired and left and wanted nothing to do with it
2008-04-11 01:57 < toresbe> Ugh, ugh, ugh.
2008-04-11 01:57 < toresbe> English finals today. Ugh.
2008-04-11 01:57 < Mark_Ryan> then wikipedia hit the big time, and suddenly he's all Co-Founder again
2008-04-11 01:57 < tawker> Mark_Ryan: note the past tense
2008-04-11 01:58 < Mark_Ryan> and larry sanger now only uses his 'co-founder' status as a springboard to promote his own Nupedia/Wikipedia clone
2008-04-11 01:58 < toresbe> Jimmy is an objectivist. That takes some points away from him in my book. :)
2008-04-11 01:58 < pengo> ok i'm going to go buy some potatoes because they're more interesting than jimbo.
2008-04-11 01:59 < rafterman> I like the idea of citizendium.
2008-04-11 01:59 < rafterman> just can't produce like wikipedia can
2008-04-11 01:59 < Mark_Ryan> pengo, sounds interesting :D
2008-04-11 01:59 < pengo> Mark_Ryan: very.
2008-04-11 01:59 < tawker> a lot of things had to fall into place for Wikipedia to happen
2008-04-11 01:59 < tawker> if you ask me, Jimmy should buy lotto tickets
2008-04-11 01:59 < tawker> lightning struck once, it can again
2008-04-11 02:00 < rafterman> well wikipedia was waiting to happen since the internet was born
2008-04-11 02:01 < Mark_Ryan> i wonder how well the story about the Spanish Wikipedia fork is known
2008-04-11 02:01 < tawker> somewhat
2008-04-11 02:01 < rafterman> Tell Grandpa Tell
2008-04-11 02:01 < tawker> I'm somewhat well versed in it
2008-04-11 02:01 * Mark_Ryan lets tawker tell, while he goes to get lunch
2008-04-11 02:01 < zocky> i wonder why we're suppressing our history all the time
2008-04-11 02:01 * tawker tells people to consult Wikipedia
2008-04-11 02:02 < tawker> well, there are a few books in the work that cover it
2008-04-11 02:02 < rafterman> oh. you mean a fork, not like a utensil
2008-04-11 02:02 < tawker> very well
2008-04-11 02:02 < rafterman> i thought it was a wikipedia fable
2008-04-11 02:02 < rafterman> damn
2008-04-11 02:03 < Lubaf> Anybody want some paper-free acid?
2008-04-11 02:03 < rafterman> what does it come on?
2008-04-11 02:03 < rafterman> i do like saving the environment
2008-04-11 02:03 < nokmar> paper-free acid?
2008-04-11 02:03 * tawker uses computers to save the environment
2008-04-11 02:03 < tawker> by printing less
2008-04-11 02:03 < tawker> i'm being green
2008-04-11 02:03 < nokmar> hmm
2008-04-11 02:03 < pengo> Lubaf: how many gsm?
2008-04-11 02:03 < rafterman> i leave my computer on
2008-04-11 02:03 < rafterman> all the time
2008-04-11 02:04 < rafterman> i wonder how much energy that uses
2008-04-11 02:04 < pengo> rafterman: desktop?
2008-04-11 02:04 < rafterman> yes
2008-04-11 02:04 < pengo> rafterman: screen on too?
2008-04-11 02:04 < rafterman> better believe it
2008-04-11 02:04 < pengo> rafterman: you suck :)
2008-04-11 02:04 < rafterman> hah im set in my ways at the age of 23
2008-04-11 02:04 < rafterman> no hope for me
2008-04-11 02:04 < Lubaf> pengo, you sly dog.
2008-04-11 02:04 < Lubaf> I had to look that up.
2008-04-11 02:05 < tawker> hmm
2008-04-11 02:05 < tawker> so, anyone want to join #wikipediaweekly (.org) sometime?
2008-04-11 02:06 < pengo> is there a word for trolling, but like.. using usual words so people will look them up?
2008-04-11 02:06 < tawker> umm, podcasting :D
2008-04-11 02:06 < tawker> twittering
2008-04-11 02:06 < Mark_Ryan> tawker, I got invited on to the Not The Wikipedia Weekly
2008-04-11 02:06 < pengo> i told my friend i put his picture under "cripple"
2008-04-11 02:06 < pengo> he checked
2008-04-11 02:06 < tawker> Mark_Ryan: we're still trying to figure out the difference between the two
2008-04-11 02:06 < pengo> but then i did put my uncle under "potato peeler"
2008-04-11 02:07 < Mark_Ryan> tawker, I don't recall getting invited onto the Wikipedia Weekly.
2008-04-11 02:07 < tawker> Mark_Ryan: want to be?
2008-04-11 02:07 < tawker> I think we did ages ago
2008-04-11 02:07 < tawker> and you had declined at the time
2008-04-11 02:07 < Mark_Ryan> no, I'm just saying
2008-04-11 02:07 < Mark_Ryan> plus i had dialup then
2008-04-11 02:07 < rafterman> I'm very interested in the To Troll or not to Troll debate.
2008-04-11 02:07 < rafterman> They can provide a valuable service.
2008-04-11 02:09 < tawker> yeah
2008-04-11 02:09 < tawker> the one thing w/ Wikipedia Weekly is
2008-04-11 02:09 < tawker> we don't censor
2008-04-11 02:09 < tawker> as long as we're not going to get sued for publishing it, we generally will post it
2008-04-11 02:14 < tawker> oh well
2008-04-11 02:14 < tawker> I need sleep sometime
2008-04-11 02:20 < NoPegs> Moo.
2008-04-11 02:20 < NoPegs> /moo.
2008-04-11 02:47 < denelson83> No cows, sponge.
2008-04-11 02:47 < NoPegs> Why not?
2008-04-11 03:06 < toresbe> "Half eight" is 7:30, isn't it?
2008-04-11 03:06 < NoPegs> 8:30 iirc.
2008-04-11 03:07 < NoPegs> I'm on the wrong side of the pond to be definitave though..
2008-04-11 03:08 < toresbe> Any other voices?
2008-04-11 03:11 < ViciousGu> Hey
2008-04-11 03:11 < ViciousGu> I notice some school sites are using Wikipedia text without attributing the text to Wikipedia
2008-04-11 03:12 < ViciousGu> http://ms.houstonisd.org/ryanms/HISTORY.htm and http://www.lamarswims.com/ - this is text used from articles that I mostly wrote, and I feel flattered... but the text belongs to Wikipedia, not to me...
2008-04-11 03:12 < ViciousGu> And I think Wikipedia wants that text cited
2008-04-11 03:13 * NoPegs looks
2008-04-11 03:14 < The359> yes, it should be cited to Wikipedia
2008-04-11 03:14 < ViciousGu> So, you don't mind if I e-mail them and ask them, right?
2008-04-11 03:18 < NoPegs> ViciousGu: go for it. Just ask them to...
2008-04-11 03:19 < ViciousGu> NoPegs: Done :)
2008-04-11 03:19 < ViciousGu> For Ryan, anyway
2008-04-11 03:19 < ViciousGu> I now have to contact the Lamar Swim Team site
2008-04-11 03:20 < The359> theaten to sue them, that always works
2008-04-11 03:20 < The359> (joking)
2008-04-11 03:21 < ViciousGu> Heheheeheehe :)
2008-04-11 03:21 < ViciousGu> I cannot find contact info for lamarswims, so I am just gonna assume that webmaster@lamarswims.com is valid
2008-04-11 03:22 < Mark_Ryan> have you looked for the whois contact info for the domain is? as far as i know, it needs to be valid
2008-04-11 03:23 < ViciousGu> Oh, right - I forgot
2008-04-11 03:23 < ViciousGu> Lemme check the whois
