2008-03-18 18:54 < shimgray> all material in there should be a) replicated in the main text; b) sourced in the main text
2008-03-18 18:55 < shimgray> to use the analogy of academic writing, you never footnote your abstracts!
2008-03-18 18:55 < shimgray> (one caveat - if your intro uses a direct quote, cite that)
2008-03-18 18:55 < Ausir> Arthur C. Clarke should get a 1x4x9 tombstone
2008-03-18 18:55 < SynergeticMag> lol
2008-03-18 18:55 < mavhc> I want one of those
2008-03-18 18:56 < Lady_Aleena> What is an abstract?
2008-03-18 18:56 < Lady_Aleena> blurb please.
2008-03-18 18:56 < mavhc> 1x4x9, completely black, emits a wifi signal with my details
2008-03-18 18:56 < NotASpy> Lady_Aleena: have a look at [[Oxygen]] - that should be a decent enough article to base other articles around.
2008-03-18 18:57 < Lady_Aleena> brb...phone call
2008-03-18 18:58 < SynergeticMag> "When it first crossed over with another series, it started a chain reaction through the television world that still continues today"
2008-03-18 18:58 < SynergeticMag> that needs a source
2008-03-18 18:59 < SynergeticMag> "Since the first crossover, over 150 television series can be considered part of the same shared reality due to spin-offs and crossovers."
2008-03-18 18:59 < SynergeticMag> that too
2008-03-18 18:59 < SynergeticMag> if you source those two sentences, the rest should be fine
2008-03-18 19:00 < ideogram> or you could delete them
2008-03-18 19:00 < SynergeticMag> then the intro wouldnt make sense :)
2008-03-18 19:00 < ideogram> I see
2008-03-18 19:01 < ideogram> It does seem to me those sentences will be hard to source.
2008-03-18 19:01 < SynergeticMag> the intro is 5 sentences, those are the major "claims", and in need of sourcing for it to exist outright
2008-03-18 19:01 < SynergeticMag> nope
2008-03-18 19:02 < SynergeticMag> i need coffee brb

2008-03-18 19:19 < Lady_Aleena> Is there a way to set this up that when my connection dies, I automatically get signed out?
2008-03-18 19:20 < wimt> Lady_Aleena, it's not automatic unless you get your client to automatically do it, but see /msg nickserv help ghost

2008-03-18 20:26 < zocky> i've been trying to find a decent news source, but I decided that i need to learn another foreign language as fluently as english
2008-03-18 20:27 < SynergeticMag> or get a translator
2008-03-18 20:27 < zocky> english language news have become so dumb that it hurts my brain to read them
2008-03-18 20:27 < Schrodinger_Cat> zocky: Economist is still good.
2008-03-18 20:27 < Luna-San> I hear al Jazeera is famous for their neutral coverage of Middle East issues.

2008-03-18 20:30 < zocky> it's all repackaged commercial PR and government spin, plus some verbal bravado from the "journalist", hopefully with some embarrassing details that show that he doesn't understand a big word or two

2008-03-18 21:22 < Enterprise_Cat> So can Vodka
2008-03-18 21:23 < Random832> gah i can't think of anything - and i want some cool stuff, not just stuff about his recent scandals
2008-03-18 21:23 < Schrodinger_Cat> Enterprise_Cat: Or, as my friend types when drunk IRC'ing - vodak
2008-03-18 21:24 < Schrodinger_Cat> Ceiling_Cat: Could you hang on for a sec. I'm looking stuff up in my LaTeX book.
2008-03-18 21:25 < zocky> NotACow, btw, I tried writing a translator from my imaginary query syntax (SELECT customer.contact.name FROM bills) to SQL, and I figured out why it can't be done: foreign keys just specify the relationship in one direction, and there's no name for the relationship in the other direction, which means that you can't use the ".name" notation for a one-to-many relationship, because it doesn't have a name.
2008-03-18 21:26 < Schrodinger_Cat> Ceiling_Cat: For the page breaks, you can use \nopagebreak[4]
2008-03-18 21:26 < zocky> i.e. if an organization can have multiple addresses, the DB may know that address.organization points to organization.id, but the organization table doesn't have any field or anything else that points to the address table.
2008-03-18 21:26 < Ceiling_Cat> Schrodinger_Cat - what is the text specified is longer than one page?
2008-03-18 21:26 < Ceiling_Cat> Does it make its best effort?
2008-03-18 21:27 < Schrodinger_Cat> Ceiling_Cat: I don't know. It might override you. The 4 is just a level of "encouragement"
2008-03-18 21:28 < Schrodinger_Cat> As for the text, I'm still looking into that. You might have to make the tables appear consecutively, and put the text in afterwards.
2008-03-18 21:30 < Ceiling_Cat> Schrodinger_Cat - how?
2008-03-18 21:30 < Ceiling_Cat> that's exactly what I want to do
2008-03-18 21:30 < Ceiling_Cat> I have 7 tables, and no text in between
2008-03-18 21:30 < Ceiling_Cat> latex breaks them up, 5 consectuviely (3 on one page, 2 immediately afteward on teh next), and then some text, and then the last 2 tables
2008-03-18 21:31 < Ceiling_Cat> I want to force all 7 to appear right-after-another with no text in between
2008-03-18 21:31 < Schrodinger_Cat> Ceiling_Cat: What are you using to set up your table environment? \begin{table}?
2008-03-18 21:32 < Ceiling_Cat> \begin{table*}[h]
2008-03-18 21:32 < Ceiling_Cat> I have one of those for each of the 7 tables
2008-03-18 21:32 < Schrodinger_Cat> Ceiling_Cat: Have you tried \begin{table*}[h!}
2008-03-18 21:32 < Schrodinger_Cat> err \begin{table}[h!]
2008-03-18 21:33 < Ceiling_Cat> what does that do?
2008-03-18 21:33 < Lucifer_Cat> how does a cat go about getting a cloak?
2008-03-18 21:33 < Schrodinger_Cat> Well, according to my book: "! - Use together with any combination of the other letters, this suspends the all the spacing and number restrictions described below..."
2008-03-18 21:33 < zocky> how do I start a program in the background that doesn't die when I kill the terminal?
2008-03-18 21:34 < Schrodinger_Cat> zocky: screen
2008-03-18 21:34 < amidaniel> zocky: screen?
2008-03-18 21:34 < amidaniel> bletch
2008-03-18 21:34 * amidaniel stabs Schrodinger_Cat
2008-03-18 21:34 * Schrodinger_Cat cannot be stabbed, since you can't properly determine his position (or velocity)
2008-03-18 21:34 * zocky does man screen
2008-03-18 21:35 * Lucifer_Cat casts amidaniel under an existential spell
2008-03-18 21:35 < amidaniel> zocky: Enter "screen". start the application. Hit CTRL+A+D to detach the session
2008-03-18 21:35 < amidaniel> screen -r will resume it
2008-03-18 21:36 < Ceiling_Cat> Schrodinger_Cat - can I embed multiple tabulars in one table?
2008-03-18 21:36 < Ceiling_Cat> and can each tabular have its own caption?
2008-03-18 21:36 < Schrodinger_Cat> Ceiling_Cat: What do you mean by "multiple tabulars?"
2008-03-18 21:36 < Ceiling_Cat> \begin{table} \begin{tablular} \end{tablular} \begin{tablular} \end{tablular} \end{table}
2008-03-18 21:36 < Ceiling_Cat> something like that
2008-03-18 21:37 < zocky> amidaniel, thanks
2008-03-18 21:37 < Schrodinger_Cat> Ceiling_Cat: Hmmm. I'm not all that familiar with tabulars.
2008-03-18 21:37 * Schrodinger_Cat reads more
2008-03-18 21:37 < zocky> works, though it seems a bit silly, but meh
2008-03-18 21:39 < Schrodinger_Cat> Ceiling_Cat: I'm not sure. I think it should work.
2008-03-18 21:39 < zocky> I guess I need to start stjerm some other way then from a terminal window
2008-03-18 21:39 * zocky <3 stjerm
2008-03-18 21:39 < Lucifer_Cat> Ceiling_Cat: thesis topic damnit
2008-03-18 21:39 < zocky> like tilda, but it seems to actually work
2008-03-18 21:39 < Ceiling_Cat> yes
2008-03-18 21:39 < Ceiling_Cat> apparently you can
2008-03-18 21:39 < Ceiling_Cat> Lucifer_Cat - I told you already, dammit
2008-03-18 21:39 < Lucifer_Cat> oops.
2008-03-18 21:39 < Enterprise_Cat> Oh noes!
2008-03-18 21:40 < Lucifer_Cat> ahh it wasnt addressed to me explicitly.. so i must have missed it while i was on the phone
2008-03-18 21:40 < Ceiling_Cat> Lucifer_Cat - I took a benchmark written by a colleague of mine and put it on the Cray MTA-2
2008-03-18 21:41 < Messedrocker> i want to fucking kill history outlines
2008-03-18 21:41 < Messedrocker> i've done it once
2008-03-18 21:41 < Messedrocker> and i've done it before
2008-03-18 21:41 < Schrodinger_Cat> Ceiling_Cat: The multiple tabulars inside a table works?
2008-03-18 21:41 < Lucifer_Cat> great, just when i scrolled all the way up and read it :\
2008-03-18 21:41 < Messedrocker> i am going to bury antebellum social reform
2008-03-18 21:41 < Lucifer_Cat> cool topic though
2008-03-18 21:41 < Schrodinger_Cat> Messedrocker: Like Kruschev planned to bury the West?
2008-03-18 21:42 < Messedrocker> yes
2008-03-18 21:42 < SynergeticMag> you know, there's alot of cats in here
2008-03-18 21:42 < SynergeticMag> just an observation
2008-03-18 21:42 < Schrodinger_Cat> SynergeticMag: Well, you don't know if one of them is dead or alive
2008-03-18 21:42 < SynergeticMag> thats funny
2008-03-18 21:42 < SynergeticMag> and i get it
2008-03-18 21:43 < Lucifer_Cat> when i was growing up, one of the cutest girls in my town was called Nikita.... and i could never reconcile that name with the image of an idiot dictator
2008-03-18 21:43 < SynergeticMag> ever read the book by Rober Anton Wilson?
2008-03-18 21:43 < Schrodinger_Cat> SynergeticMag: If you didn't get it, you wouldn't be here.
2008-03-18 21:43 < SynergeticMag> :)~
2008-03-18 21:43 < Schrodinger_Cat> SynergeticMag: No. Which book?
2008-03-18 21:44 < name_name> meow?
2008-03-18 21:44 < Enterprise_Cat> eh?
2008-03-18 21:45 < Schrodinger_Cat> name_name: You are not a cat. You cannot meow.
2008-03-18 21:45 < zocky> Lucifer_Cat, how about reconciling the image of an idiot dictator with a person who ran a country of 250 million people, defeated the remaining stalinist tendency, and successfully negotiated the avoidance of nuclear cataclysm?
2008-03-18 21:45 < name_name> T__T
2008-03-18 21:45 < SynergeticMag> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schr%C3%B6dinger%27s_Cat_Trilogy
2008-03-18 21:45 < SynergeticMag> er, that book
2008-03-18 21:45 < SynergeticMag> its really good
2008-03-18 21:46 < name_name> what does #wikipedia know about the anon vs. Co$, I'm rather confused about what's going on?
2008-03-18 21:47 < Cyrius> name_name: what's to be confused about?
2008-03-18 21:47 < Schrodinger_Cat> zocky: Well, its not like Kruschev was a saint either. Certainly he was better than Stalin, but its quite arguable that Kruschev brought the Cuban missile crisis upon himself by trying to sneak missiles into America's backyard and hoping not to get caught. Kruschev also created the space race, and the ballistic missile arms race with his famous comment about Soviet rockets coming of the assembly line like sausages.
2008-03-18 21:47 < name_name> what's going on
2008-03-18 21:47 < name_name> I just got on the internet yesterday
2008-03-18 21:48 < Cyrius> obviously
2008-03-18 21:48 < name_name> no rly, but if I did, what's going on
2008-03-18 21:48 < Cyrius> well, in the beginning, the galactic lord xenu...
2008-03-18 21:48 < name_name> I've been on the internet since 1998
2008-03-18 21:48 < name_name> ok.. xenu
2008-03-18 21:48 < zocky> Schrodinger_Cat, my point is solely that he was not an idiot
2008-03-18 21:48 * name_name takes notes
2008-03-18 21:48 < Schrodinger_Cat> name_name: Anon did something to the Co$. Co$ responded by DDoS'ing a bunch of the *Chans, where Anon likes to hang out. Then Anon decided to take it to the real world, with their organized protests of Scientology centers around the world.
2008-03-18 21:48 < Cyrius> you haven't made any effort to research this, have you? =)
2008-03-18 21:49 < Schrodinger_Cat> name_name: That's pretty much the gist of it.
2008-03-18 21:49 < Schrodinger_Cat> zocky: That is true. Kruschev was anything but.
2008-03-18 21:49 < name_name> the IRL media says it was a tom cruise video.. and misuse of the DMCA. is that BS...
2008-03-18 21:49 < name_name> @_@
2008-03-18 21:50 < zocky> any exploding white vans?

2008-03-18 21:51 < Schrodinger_Cat> name_name: That might have been the shot that started this war, as it were.
2008-03-18 21:51 < Cyrius> name_name: well, there is the whole issue of scientology's long-term scumminess
2008-03-18 21:51 < zocky> who says ED is unnotable? they're #1 on google for "exploding van"
2008-03-18 21:51 * name_name takes more notes.
2008-03-18 21:52 < name_name> ... wait, why is the internet attacking a church
2008-03-18 21:52 < name_name> that doesn't seem right
2008-03-18 21:52 < Cyrius> because they're a cult/scam
2008-03-18 21:52 < zocky> and it's not "the internet"
2008-03-18 21:52 < Cyrius> and criminal organization
2008-03-18 21:53 < name_name> oh...
2008-03-18 21:53 < Monobi> Ceiling_Cat: you are insane
2008-03-18 21:53 < zocky> the internet is just a bunch of electrons being flushed down tubes of various diameters
2008-03-18 21:53 < Cyrius> Monobi: tell us something we don't know
2008-03-18 21:53 < name_name> well it might as well be the internet, that's what ppl are acting like
2008-03-18 21:53 < Schrodinger_Cat> name_name: You mess with the Internet, and the Internet messes back, is pretty much what it comes down to.
2008-03-18 21:53 < name_name> k
2008-03-18 21:53 < Monobi> Cyrius: 2 + 2 != 4
2008-03-18 21:53 < Monobi> Ceiling_Cat: while you're at it, give me lvl 10 access too :p
2008-03-18 21:54 * name_name makes note not to mess with the internet, b/c of electruction
2008-03-18 21:54 < Monobi> at least I have ops somewhere else
2008-03-18 21:54 < Schrodinger_Cat> Monobi: Of course, 2 + 2 = 1
2008-03-18 21:54 < Monobi> and arent INSANE ;)
2008-03-18 21:54 < Monobi> Schrodinger_Cat: {{fact}}
