2008-03-08 10:44 < Thehelpfulone2> fruitbag: relate 2 people in this channel together then :D
2008-03-08 10:44 < fruitbag> Taking someone as a reference, if you trace their friend tree, every single living human would be traced.
2008-03-08 10:44 < fruitbag> ...they would be all be socially related in some way.
2008-03-08 10:44 < fruitbag> Not just friends.
2008-03-08 10:45 < fruitbag> Well, maybe loners won't be mapped out.
2008-03-08 10:45 < Zginder> Not if there are people somewhere we do not know, like under the ice in Antarctica.
2008-03-08 10:45 < Thehelpfulone2> XD
2008-03-08 10:46 < Traveler7> If you trace your family tree back, doubling the number of ancestors at each generation then...
2008-03-08 10:46 < fruitbag> Zginder: the Amish, possibly.
2008-03-08 10:46 < fruitbag> Traveler7: well, every human being is somehow related.
2008-03-08 10:46 < fruitbag> We are all distant cousins.
2008-03-08 10:46 < Thehelpfulone2> fruitbag: where do you live?
2008-03-08 10:46 < Traveler7> eventually you get a number that is greater than the population of the earth at that time. By my reckoning that means we're all 15th cousins
2008-03-08 10:46 < fruitbag> Why is that important.
2008-03-08 10:46 < Thehelpfulone2> fruitbag: I am trying to prove a point... :D
2008-03-08 10:46 < fruitbag> Traveler7: this is actually a mathematical problem.
2008-03-08 10:46 < Thehelpfulone2> just tell me which continent :D
2008-03-08 10:47 < Thehelpfulone2> i.e. USA :D
2008-03-08 10:47 * Thehelpfulone2 notes that is not really a continent
2008-03-08 10:47 < fruitbag> But, think about it, Thehelpfulone2... if you trace someone's friend tree, every social being will be included in it.
2008-03-08 10:47 < fruitbag> That's my theory.
2008-03-08 10:47 < fruitbag> Isolated groups may not be included.
2008-03-08 10:48 < Wegge> Traveler7 That theory requires that mobility have been the same over time.
2008-03-08 10:49 < Wegge> I'm not sure that people living 15 generations ago would have the same mobility as now
2008-03-08 10:50 < Zginder> Are you counting the dead people when only having 15 generations?
2008-03-08 10:51 < Zginder> If a generation is 30 years that is 450 years and is 1558.
2008-03-08 10:51 < fruitbag> Any thoughts, guys?
2008-03-08 10:51 < fruitbag> I find this idea fascinating.
2008-03-08 10:51 < fruitbag> ...the fact that, through friendships, one may trace someone that is important in their friend tree.
2008-03-08 10:52 < The359> hmmm, crap
2008-03-08 10:52 < The359> just missed it
2008-03-08 10:52 < fruitbag> ...someone prominent
2008-03-08 10:52 * The359 : Saturday March 08 2008 Current time is 10:52:53am -0500 GMT
2008-03-08 10:53 * The359 was born 10:45am EST March 08 1983
2008-03-08 10:53 < Aqwis> like jimbo wales?
2008-03-08 10:56 < fruitbag> Well, why not.
2008-03-08 10:56 < fruitbag> Aqwis: who knows
2008-03-08 10:56 < Wegge> Zginder There's no need to go further back than 1558, to find a severely limited mobility
2008-03-08 10:57 < Wegge> Go 3 generations further bacvk, and all communication between europe and the americas is effectively absent
2008-03-08 10:57 < fruitbag> mobility? What are you talking about, Wegge?
2008-03-08 10:57 < Wegge> Everyone beeing related to each other
2008-03-08 10:57 < Wegge> Within the last 15 generations
2008-03-08 10:58 < Wegge> Correction, 17. The OP mentioned 15th cousin
2008-03-08 10:58 < fruitbag> Wegge: is that a theory?
2008-03-08 10:59 < Zginder> There was some communication between natives the modern Russia and Alaska.
2008-03-08 10:59 < Wegge> The noorse also visited north america in the 11th century
2008-03-08 11:00 < Wegge> But that doesn't scale to the level of travel now.
2008-03-08 11:00 < Wegge> Zginder:
2008-03-08 11:00 < Wegge> <Traveler7> eventually you get a number that is greater than the population of the earth at that time. By my reckoning that means we're all 15th cousins
2008-03-08 11:00 < Zginder> What about Easter island? Once settled no one for the outside saw it for centuries.
2008-03-08 11:00 < Wegge> That also
2008-03-08 11:02 < fruitbag> Well, the human species originates from Africa.
2008-03-08 11:03 < fruitbag> That's where your roots will eventually terminate.
2008-03-08 11:04 < Aqwis> we are also related to every animal, of course
2008-03-08 11:05 < fruitbag> Aqwis: well, let's not go that far.
2008-03-08 11:05 < Zginder> There are two theories here one with all humans being biologically related.
2008-03-08 11:05 < fruitbag> ...the missing link is still a mystery.
2008-03-08 11:05 < Aqwis> that doesn't matter since the missing like ought to exist
2008-03-08 11:05 < Aqwis> it's not like we're aliens
2008-03-08 11:06 < Zginder> And the other that we are all related via contacts at this moment (or any moment)
2008-03-08 11:06 < fruitbag> Aqwis: it too an extremely long time for us to get here and be using this technology
2008-03-08 11:06 < Zginder> And evolution is yet a third theory.
2008-03-08 11:06 < Aqwis> "it too an"
2008-03-08 11:06 < Aqwis> ?
2008-03-08 11:11 < moralist> how do you do if an ip who wants to be user can't see the picture with letters?

2008-03-08 11:13 < moralist> Wegge: The problem is that the user can't see the letters in the picture
2008-03-08 11:14 < Wegge> Yes
2008-03-08 11:14 < Wegge> Let an already existing user create the account, after the proper verification that it's an actual erson.

2008-03-08 12:10 < Cyrius> just?
2008-03-08 12:12 < Messedrocker> my spam count has reached record highs
2008-03-08 12:12 < Messedrocker> 1255 in the past month
2008-03-08 12:13 < Sfan00> Time to start nucking the servers that spam you with abuse complaints?
2008-03-08 12:13 < Messedrocker> 1) i'm pretty sure spammers spoof headers
2008-03-08 12:13 < Messedrocker> 2) that's up to google
2008-03-08 12:13 < Messedrocker> and what's "nucking"
2008-03-08 12:13 < Sfan00> Google doesn't care
2008-03-08 12:13 < Sfan00> You have to hit the spammers directly
2008-03-08 12:14 < Sfan00> And FORCE the Oriignal ISP's to pressure Google
2008-03-08 12:14 < Lycurgus> pointless
2008-03-08 12:14 < Sfan00> Messedrocker: A typo
2008-03-08 12:14 < Lycurgus> worse than pointless
2008-03-08 12:15 < Lycurgus> I rarely see false positives on gmail though.
2008-03-08 12:15 < Sfan00> Besides no-one uses Google for any serious email / news work
2008-03-08 12:15 < Lycurgus> I generally don't even check before emptying the spam folder.
2008-03-08 12:15 < Sfan00> I do
2008-03-08 12:15 < Sfan00> because I read some obscure sites
2008-03-08 12:16 < Lycurgus> then they got you
2008-03-08 12:16 < Sfan00> (mainly 'liberal' politics)
2008-03-08 12:16 < Lycurgus> <- communist.
2008-03-08 12:16 < Sfan00> No
2008-03-08 12:16 < Lycurgus> No what?
2008-03-08 12:16 < Sfan00> No Sir ! :)
2008-03-08 12:16 < Sfan00> ;)
2008-03-08 12:17 < Lycurgus> I said "." not "?".
2008-03-08 12:17 < Sir48> stop calling liberals communists
2008-03-08 12:17 < Sfan00> Sir48: ROFL
2008-03-08 12:17 < Lycurgus> "<-" means that one is, i.e. me.
2008-03-08 12:18 < Lycurgus> red as the day is long.
2008-03-08 12:18 < Sfan00> Communists are far from liberal... :0
2008-03-08 12:18 < Sir48> rather far from :)
2008-03-08 12:18 < Lycurgus> yeah, I know. Commies don't get spammed apparently.
2008-03-08 12:18 < Messedrocker> actually, true communists are as liberal as it gets
2008-03-08 12:18 < Sfan00> ROFL
2008-03-08 12:19 < Sir48> no - no market with communists
2008-03-08 12:19 < Messedrocker> communism isn't a political belief, it is independent of left-right
2008-03-08 12:19 < Messedrocker> you can be a liberal communist
2008-03-08 12:19 < Messedrocker> or you could be an authoritarian like most promenant communists
2008-03-08 12:19 < Messedrocker> like Stalin
2008-03-08 12:19 < Sfan00> Messedrocker: Communist seeks to abolish the market, whats liberal about that?
2008-03-08 12:19 < Lycurgus> yeah, but I would be left of the Trots so I'm off-scale.
2008-03-08 12:20 < Lycurgus> so red as to be royal.
2008-03-08 12:20 < Sfan00> And as an economic model communism failed miserably
2008-03-08 12:20 < Sfan00> Look at Russia
2008-03-08 12:20 < Messedrocker> well yes
2008-03-08 12:20 < Messedrocker> soviet union failed as it was authoritarian
2008-03-08 12:20 < Messedrocker> it was authoritarian because people did not want it
2008-03-08 12:20 < Messedrocker> communism doesn't work when you don't have complete compliance of the people
2008-03-08 12:21 < Sfan00> Busharic law doesn't work when you don't have a compliant population....
2008-03-08 12:21 < Sfan00> ;)
2008-03-08 12:21 < Sfan00> So you have to scare them into compliance ;)
2008-03-08 12:21 < Messedrocker> yes
2008-03-08 12:21 < Lycurgus> hey maybe do some research? Just because X decides to hijack some term doesn't mean X is really what that term was/is intended to mean.
2008-03-08 12:21 < Messedrocker> which is how war-mongering government has existed ever
2008-03-08 12:21 < Messedrocker> Lycurgus - exactly
2008-03-08 12:22 < Messedrocker> communism is supposed to be about egalitarianism, where everyone is equal
2008-03-08 12:22 < Messedrocker> economic egalitarianism
2008-03-08 12:22 < Sfan00> ROFL
2008-03-08 12:22 < Sfan00> Which is a fallacy
2008-03-08 12:22 < Messedrocker> unfortunately, soviet leaders managed to take a shit on it
2008-03-08 12:22 < Lycurgus> communism is more or less defined by it's famous manifesto
2008-03-08 12:22 < Messedrocker> by making everyone the Poor class
2008-03-08 12:22 < Sir48> It could make you try to live up to the term - like when i hijacked the "Sir" :)
2008-03-08 12:22 < Lycurgus> and subsequent theory which states that communism and the state are antithetical
2008-03-08 12:22 < Messedrocker> and by associating communism with authoritarianism
2008-03-08 12:23 < Lycurgus> therefore there cannot be and cannot ever have been a communist state
2008-03-08 12:23 < Sfan00> Communisum is equality by downgrading
2008-03-08 12:23 < Lycurgus> least of all Stalinist Russia.
2008-03-08 12:23 < Messedrocker> Lycurgus, say communism really lived up to its egalitarian name, and everyone was compliant, and the communist state was really, really small
2008-03-08 12:23 < Messedrocker> could it work?
2008-03-08 12:23 < Sir48> and there never will be...
2008-03-08 12:23 < Sfan00> Messedrocker: Does the Wiki model of editing work ? ;)
2008-03-08 12:24 < Messedrocker> somewhat
2008-03-08 12:24 < Lycurgus> yes, if was contained within the body of every person participating in the order
2008-03-08 12:24 < Lycurgus> *it
2008-03-08 12:24 < Messedrocker> everyone has to be for it in order for it to work, otherwise you have disenfranchised people who'll want to make a mess
2008-03-08 12:24 < Lycurgus> how is the Jimbo scandal going?
2008-03-08 12:25 < Sfan00> A lot of socialist and communist campaigners lobby for 'equal' status apart from the fact that not everyone is of equal inteligence
2008-03-08 12:25 < Sfan00> so any notion of making evryone equal is a fallacy...
2008-03-08 12:25 < Lycurgus> Sfan00: see my POV page re that.
2008-03-08 12:25 < Messedrocker> you cannot make people intellectually equal, no
2008-03-08 12:25 * shimgray looks at the discussion, sees an entire straw civilisation, and retires again
2008-03-08 12:25 < Sfan00> Lycurgus: Link?
2008-03-08 12:25 < Messedrocker> hell, you don't even have to make everyone economically equal
2008-03-08 12:26 < Lycurgus> (Terrestrial Political Perspectives)
2008-03-08 12:26 < Sir48> maybe when brain-transplant becomes possible :)
2008-03-08 12:26 < Messedrocker> granted what i am suggesting is probably not communism, but you just have to make everyone equal under the government
2008-03-08 12:26 < Sfan00> Messedrocker: Political equality?
2008-03-08 12:26 < Lycurgus> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/user:lycurgus/POV
2008-03-08 12:26 < Messedrocker> unlike the current system where the wealthy can buy the government
2008-03-08 12:26 < Sfan00> Isn't that supposed to happen in the US?
2008-03-08 12:26 < Messedrocker> i said
2008-03-08 12:26 < Messedrocker> unlike the current system where the wealthy can buy the government
2008-03-08 12:27 < Sfan00> LOL
2008-03-08 12:27 < Sfan00> If business doesn't fund govt's you taxes will go up
2008-03-08 12:28 < Sfan00> And you get a Govt obssesed with tax
2008-03-08 12:28 < Sfan00> :(
2008-03-08 12:28 < Messedrocker> no, i am not talking about businesses paying taxes to the government
2008-03-08 12:28 < Messedrocker> i mean them buying the government
2008-03-08 12:28 < Sfan00> As in ?
2008-03-08 12:29 < Lycurgus> it is far worse than the wealthy buying the government.
2008-03-08 12:29 < Sfan00> The US Needs to get Lutherian about corruption?
2008-03-08 12:29 < Messedrocker> Lutherian?
2008-03-08 12:29 < Messedrocker> a special interest does not gain leverage over the government by paying taxes
2008-03-08 12:29 < Lycurgus> rather, in the order they command, they already own but refuse to pay for it.
2008-03-08 12:29 < Messedrocker> they get leverage over buying lobbyists
2008-03-08 12:29 < Lycurgus> *it
2008-03-08 12:29 < Sfan00> Messedrocker: Luther came to notice over his preachings about corruption in the Church?
2008-03-08 12:30 < quanticle|away> Messedrocker: The issue with making everyone equal under the government is that, without draconian rules, its an unstable equilibrium. If everyone starts from an equal base, from day 1 you'll see people wheeling and dealing to increase their own political influence.
2008-03-08 12:30 < Messedrocker> and a really good government will keep the assholes at bay
2008-03-08 12:30 < Sfan00> ROFL
2008-03-08 12:30 < Messedrocker> and it will let the good people get to power
2008-03-08 12:31 < Messedrocker> i am discussing idealism; not an actual government
2008-03-08 12:31 < quanticle> Messedrocker: Or a really dicatorial one. I for one, don't think that being an asshole should be illegal.
2008-03-08 12:31 < Messedrocker> no
2008-03-08 12:31 < Messedrocker> people cannot control that they have asperger syndrome
2008-03-08 12:31 < Sfan00> Well the US elected BUSH so.... :)
2008-03-08 12:31 < quanticle> Messedrocker: But what use is idealism if it cannot be applied to the world.
2008-03-08 12:31 < Messedrocker> Sfan00, his name is not an acronym
2008-03-08 12:32 < Sfan00> ...
2008-03-08 12:32 < Sfan00> Sorry
2008-03-08 12:32 < Sfan00> Bush
2008-03-08 12:32 < Messedrocker> quanticle, you're speaking as though my words could be applied to the real world
2008-03-08 12:32 < Messedrocker> as if i will ever be in the position to model a government
2008-03-08 12:32 < Rinn> Smash Bros. Brawl tomorrow!
2008-03-08 12:32 < Messedrocker> yes!!!!
2008-03-08 12:33 < Messedrocker> my poor wii hasn't got any real action since i got bored with super mario galaxy three months ago
2008-03-08 12:33 < bumm13> aww
2008-03-08 12:33 < quanticle> Messedrocker: That is true, but just because you personally will never be in a place to model government doesn't mean you should think practically about these things. After all, Locke and Marx never modeled governments personally, but they did have enormous influence on people that did.
2008-03-08 12:34 < quanticle> Messedrocker: Ah yes, my wii could use some action as well...
2008-03-08 12:34 < bumm13> :x
2008-03-08 12:35 < quanticle> Yeah, I went there...
2008-03-08 12:35 < bumm13> oh well, who am I to complain? I spent much of last night playing Jaws the NES game ;p
2008-03-08 12:35 * Messedrocker has to figure out how to let his sister know he's stealing the wii back from her
2008-03-08 12:35 < Messedrocker> bumm13, i thought that game was terrible
2008-03-08 12:35 < bumm13> it is terrible
2008-03-08 12:36 < Messedrocker> why the hell were you playing it?
2008-03-08 12:36 < bumm13> post-it note: "Messedrockerina: I stole the Wii back. Bwahaha! -- Messedrocker"
2008-03-08 12:36 < Messedrocker> according to danny her name is MessedRockette
2008-03-08 12:36 < bumm13> heh
2008-03-08 12:37 < bumm13> Messedrocker: the game has some strange appeal....for like 5 minutes :P
2008-03-08 12:37 < quanticle> bumm13: At least you weren't playing E.T. The Game...
2008-03-08 12:37 < bumm13> yeah, I'd not bother to do that
2008-03-08 12:37 < Messedrocker> i downloaded that game
2008-03-08 12:37 < Messedrocker> it is somewhat entertaining
2008-03-08 12:37 < quanticle> E.T. ?
2008-03-08 12:37 < bumm13> I have the cartridge stowed away somewhere
2008-03-08 12:38 < Messedrocker> quoth the messedrocker, "now that i've played ET I feel like killing myself"
2008-03-08 12:38 < Rinn> In a landfill?
2008-03-08 12:38 * bumm13 has lots of Atari 2600 carts he acquired about 8-10 years ago
2008-03-08 12:38 < quanticle> Rinn: Like all the others?
2008-03-08 12:38 < The359> I played it online as well
2008-03-08 12:39 < The359> it made no sense
2008-03-08 12:39 < quanticle> The359: That's why they had bury more than 50% of the cartridges made in a landfill.
2008-03-08 12:40 < Messedrocker> bumm13, we are eternally indebted to Nintendo for fixing video gaming permanently
2008-03-08 12:40 < The359> I know the story, quanticle
2008-03-08 12:40 < quanticle> Messedrocker: Naw... If Nintendo hadn't got there, some other company would have.
2008-03-08 12:40 < Messedrocker> yeah
2008-03-08 12:40 < quanticle> Messedrocker: Probably Sega
2008-03-08 12:41 < Messedrocker> Sega
2008-03-08 12:41 < Messedrocker> pffft
2008-03-08 12:41 < Messedrocker> screw sega
2008-03-08 12:41 < quanticle> Screw you!
2008-03-08 12:41 * quanticle is a huge Sonic nerd
2008-03-08 12:41 < Messedrocker> er well yes
2008-03-08 12:41 < Messedrocker> sega became good in 1991
2008-03-08 12:41 < Messedrocker> before then they were a pile of shank
2008-03-08 12:42 < quanticle> Yeah, that's true.
2008-03-08 12:42 < quanticle> And afterwards, they had technically good consoles with poor marketing.
2008-03-08 12:42 < quanticle> Like the Saturn and Dreamcast.
2008-03-08 12:42 < Messedrocker> w00t!
2008-03-08 12:42 < Messedrocker> two phone parts!
2008-03-08 12:43 < quanticle> Of course, those two did go up against the PlayStation and PS2, so I suppose they did deserve to get rocked...
2008-03-08 12:43 < quanticle> Messedrocker: Playing E.T.?
2008-03-08 12:43 < Messedrocker> yes
2008-03-08 12:43 < quanticle> Heh. Have you fallen into a pit yet?
2008-03-08 12:43 < Messedrocker> several
2008-03-08 12:43 < Messedrocker> in a conquest for phone parts
2008-03-08 12:44 < The359> Been molested by the roaming guy?
2008-03-08 12:44 < Messedrocker> that's why you hold down button while running
2008-03-08 12:44 < bumm13> the game was rushed, 'nuff said
2008-03-08 12:45 * Messedrocker likes how Mega Man 2 takes places in 200X -- in a couple of years, it'll be considered a historic game!
2008-03-08 12:45 < The359> I doubt it'd be any better with time
2008-03-08 12:45 < bumm13> even then, it wouldn't have been all that great
2008-03-08 12:45 < bumm13> teh futurez
2008-03-08 12:45 < bumm13> *teh futurez!
2008-03-08 12:46 < The359> holy cow
2008-03-08 12:46 < The359> the future is now
2008-03-08 12:50 < Golbez> http://hirise.lpl.arizona.edu/images/2008/details/cut/PSP_005558_0940_cut_b.jpg
2008-03-08 12:50 < Golbez> Home.
2008-03-08 12:50 < The359> what took the picture
2008-03-08 12:50 < Golbez> HiRISE
2008-03-08 12:50 < Golbez> "The High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment camera is a camera onboard the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter."
2008-03-08 12:52 < Golbez> They swung it around while in orbit of Mars and snapped that shot of us.
2008-03-08 12:52 < The359> cool
2008-03-08 12:53 < The359> Us and them
2008-03-08 12:59 < nsh> them bones
2008-03-08 13:03 < zvook> we should really ban All Music Guide as a source. Ban it hard.
2008-03-08 13:12 < shimgray> Golbez: they love doing that - I remember MGS doing much the same shot
2008-03-08 13:18 < rw> hello world
2008-03-08 13:34 < Lycurgus> hello rw
2008-03-08 14:36 < TheWeasel_> "We have gotten thousands of letters this week. This of course means the Scrabble factory has exploded again."
2008-03-08 14:37 < quanticle> TheWeasel: Where's that from?
2008-03-08 14:37 < TheWeasel_> I'm Sorry I Haven't A Clue
2008-03-08 14:38 < TheWeasel_> (the BBC show)
2008-03-08 14:39 < quanticle> Oh. I thought you actually didn't have any idea.
2008-03-08 14:40 < TheWeasel_> or something like "Nietzsche said life is either torture or boredom. In this show, whe refuse to choose."
2008-03-08 14:42 < nsh> any russian-speakers about?
2008-03-08 14:42 < quanticle> Guess not.
2008-03-08 14:42 < TheWeasel_> nyet
2008-03-08 14:43 < TheWeasel_> nye move po russky
2008-03-08 14:43 < TheWeasel_> (not sure about the second one, I'm extrapolating from Polish)
2008-03-08 14:45 < quanticle> How similar are Polish and Russian?
2008-03-08 14:45 < shimgray> govorit, isn't it?
2008-03-08 14:45 < shimgray> or somesuch
2008-03-08 14:45 < TheWeasel_> not terribly, phonetically
2008-03-08 14:45 < TheWeasel_> that's Hebrew.
2008-03-08 14:46 < TheWeasel_> hehe
2008-03-08 14:46 < TheWeasel_> but the words are recognizable
2008-03-08 14:46 < TheWeasel_> just not easily transferrable
2008-03-08 14:47 < TheWeasel_> Polish is a West Slavic language
2008-03-08 14:47 < TheWeasel_> like Czech
2008-03-08 14:48 < TheWeasel_> "he checkmated his Czech mate.."
2008-03-08 14:50 < TheWeasel_> oh, turns out it's "gvar" in Russian after all
2008-03-08 14:50 < TheWeasel_> :-)
2008-03-08 14:51 < quanticle> TheWeasel_: In Polish, how does one pronounce "cz"?
2008-03-08 14:51 < TheWeasel_> ch
2008-03-08 14:52 < TheWeasel_> (like English ch)
2008-03-08 14:52 < TheWeasel_> czerwony = cherVOnee
2008-03-08 14:52 < TheWeasel_> = red
2008-03-08 14:53 < quanticle> TheWeasel_: So, how would one pronounce: Krzyzewski
2008-03-08 14:53 < TheWeasel_> depends on what's on top of the second z
2008-03-08 14:54 < quanticle> TheWeasel_: Ah, its an English transliteration, so there's nothing on top of the second z
2008-03-08 14:54 < TheWeasel_> Kzhizevsky as it stands here
2008-03-08 14:54 < TheWeasel_> zh being a voiced sh
2008-03-08 14:54 < TheWeasel_> i.e. there's a "sound"
2008-03-08 14:56 < TheWeasel_> the tongue vibrates more
2008-03-08 14:56 < Lycurgus> Americans don't believe in EITHER other languages or evolution.
2008-03-08 14:56 < quanticle> Hmmm. I need to close IRC for a bit... Doing some network monitoring...
2008-03-08 14:57 < TheWeasel_> ...like z is a voiced s
2008-03-08 14:57 < TheWeasel_> hm
2008-03-08 14:57 < Lycurgus> them foreigners could speak English like everybody else if they wanted to
2008-03-08 14:57 * TheWeasel_ does!
2008-03-08 14:58 < TheWeasel_> I got no problem with it either
2008-03-08 14:59 < shimgray> Lycurgus: Un homme qui parle trois langue est trilingue. Un homme qui parle deux langues est bilingue.
2008-03-08 14:59 < shimgray> Un homme qui parle un langue est Americane.
2008-03-08 14:59 < shimgray> (except in, er, slightly less shit French)
2008-03-08 14:59 < Lycurgus> not even
2008-03-08 15:00 < Lycurgus> ie. articulately
2008-03-08 15:00 < TheWeasel_> c'est dommage pour les femmes donc.
2008-03-08 15:00 < TheWeasel_> haha
2008-03-08 15:00 < MessedRawker> what's "donc"
2008-03-08 15:00 < Lycurgus> which would indicated gayness or snobbiness
2008-03-08 15:00 < Lycurgus> though not so much as it used to be
2008-03-08 15:00 < TheWeasel_> "so"
2008-03-08 15:00 < TheWeasel_> "that way"
2008-03-08 15:01 < Lycurgus> *indicate
2008-03-08 15:02 < Lycurgus> chomksy has a good article from the 16th of last month on his .info site, going back there
2008-03-08 15:02 < TheWeasel_> Well, if my French ever gets as good as Paul Auster's I'll be a happy camper.
2008-03-08 15:05 < rw> good evening my dear friends!
2008-03-08 15:22 * TheWeasel_ records a parody called There, There, And Nowhere Else
2008-03-08 15:28 < TheWeasel_> *Beatles - Don't Bother Me (1964)
2008-03-08 15:29 * zvook now playing Jemini The Gifted One - [Diggin In The Crates #07] Scars and Pain 4:30
2008-03-08 15:52 < TheWeasel_> Interesting how many disease-related articles are good to very good.
2008-03-08 15:52 < TheWeasel_> some people obviously think about those things quite a bit.
2008-03-08 15:55 < shimgray> it's something we're excellently suited for
2008-03-08 15:56 < NotAPolecat> *Los Bravos - Black Is Black (1965)
2008-03-08 15:56 < NotAPolecat> Yep.

2008-03-08 15:56 < NotAPolecat> Yea, true.
2008-03-08 15:57 < bumm13> I notice songs from that year as I seem to like a ton of them ;)
2008-03-08 15:57 < NotAPolecat> It's kind of a transitional year
2008-03-08 15:57 < NotAPolecat> very peculiar
2008-03-08 15:57 < bumm13> yeah
2008-03-08 15:57 < bumm13> indeed
2008-03-08 15:58 < bumm13> for a Latino group that did have a hit in '65, try "Land of 1000 Dances" by Cannibal and the Headhunters :)

2008-03-08 15:59 < bumm13> The Stones Rolling
2008-03-08 15:59 < NotAPolecat> probably one of the most brilliant Stones songs ever
2008-03-08 15:59 < bumm13> yeah
2008-03-08 15:59 < NotAPolecat> Chris Andrews: Yesterday Man
2008-03-08 15:59 < NotAPolecat> Argh
2008-03-08 15:59 < bumm13> never heard of that
2008-03-08 15:59 < NotAPolecat> British pop

2008-03-08 16:00 < bumm13> that never was a hit in the U.S., I imagine
2008-03-08 16:00 < NotAPolecat> The Beach Boys: Sloop John B.

2008-03-08 16:00 < NotAPolecat> and finally Kinks: Dandy
2008-03-08 16:01 < bumm13> that second to last one is also unfamiliar to me
2008-03-08 16:01 < bumm13> (crazy group name :x )
2008-03-08 16:01 < NotAPolecat> That was the first time ever that kids bought a majority of records
2008-03-08 16:01 < NotAPolecat> Minor British Invasion band

2008-03-08 16:03 < Lycurgus> "They're coming to take me away."
2008-03-08 16:04 < NotAPolecat> but 1966 was the first year (and one of the last) where a majority of No. 1 hits in Germany did not suck.
2008-03-08 16:04 < NotAPolecat> yea, that too
2008-03-08 16:04 < NotAPolecat> Hee hee, ha ha, ho ho
2008-03-08 16:04 < Lycurgus> freaked me out because it was released at the time of the Richard Speck murders which occured near where I lived then.

2008-03-08 16:12 < NotAPolecat> lol, someone got fired because he told his employer he had to play in the chess olympiad, then came back claiming he'd "won", to a hero's welcome
2008-03-08 16:13 < NotAPolecat> until they found out it's a team event and that guy wasn't more than a strong dilettante
2008-03-08 16:13 < NotAPolecat> and had been staying at home
2008-03-08 16:14 < NotAPolecat> team event, i.e. you can't "win" as a person
2008-03-08 16:14 < NotAPolecat> that's a heartwarming story
2008-03-08 16:20 < Lycurgus> you took a showe in 2 minutes? I'll be glad when I get mine fixed, baths are tedious.
2008-03-08 16:20 < NotAPolecat> not really.
2008-03-08 16:20 < NotAPolecat> I've still not gotten around to it.
2008-03-08 16:20 < NotAPolecat> but I'm determined!
2008-03-08 16:20 < Lycurgus> preserve your stink
2008-03-08 16:20 * NotAPolecat takes a sample

2008-03-08 16:21 < Lycurgus> *know
2008-03-08 16:21 < NotAPolecat> yea, "be prepared"/and be true in word and deed/don't solicit for your sister/that's not nice/unless you get a good percentage of her price...
2008-03-08 16:22 < NotAPolecat> as Tom Lehrer said
2008-03-08 16:23 < Lycurgus> I only made it to cub scout. I think they teach capitalist values at boy scout level.
2008-03-08 16:24 * NotAPolecat plays the Hunting Song

2008-03-08 18:00 < fruitbag> I'm going to carry out some independent research
2008-03-08 18:00 < Luna-San> *shrug* I use Firefox. Got a good set of addons all nice and configured. Tried running Opera for a while to see if I'd get any performance boost; none was apparent, so I went back to FF.
2008-03-08 18:01 < Luna-San> Never tried Safari.
2008-03-08 18:01 < fruitbag> Safari is nice
2008-03-08 18:01 < fruitbag> ...I'm using the Windows version right now
2008-03-08 18:01 < fruitbag> It has some nice features
2008-03-08 18:01 < fruitbag> Like flip back
2008-03-08 18:02 < fruitbag> That means you won't have to keep pressing back
2008-03-08 18:05 < Aqwis2> hmz
2008-03-08 18:05 < Aqwis2> do we ever put FAs about companies on the main page?
2008-03-08 18:07 < Gracenotes> Aqwis2: when they're written, yes
2008-03-08 18:07 < Aqwis2> Microsoft is an FA, unsure whether it's been on the MP
2008-03-08 18:07 < Aqwis2> it has
2008-03-08 18:07 < Aqwis2> mmm
2008-03-08 18:08 < Randomtime> how do I create a redirect to this channel
2008-03-08 18:08 < Gracenotes> Aqwis2: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Featured_articles_that_haven't_been_on_the_Main_Page#Engineering_and_technology
2008-03-08 18:09 < Randomtime> as I joined #Wikipedia by mistake, and want to redirect it
2008-03-08 18:09 < Gracenotes> just two biographies and a history of classical technology
2008-03-08 18:09 < Gracenotes> Randomtime: channels are case-insensitive
2008-03-08 18:09 < Aqwis2> i'm surprised that we don't have more FAs on companies
2008-03-08 18:09 < Gracenotes> joining #Wikipedia == joining #wikipedia
2008-03-08 18:10 < Randomtime> I'm on irc://freenode/Wikipeida now, and it's just me
2008-03-08 18:10 < Aqwis2> getting an article on the front page would be a nice advertisement, even if the article is NPOV and all
2008-03-08 18:10 < NotACow> Randomtime: wikipeida?
2008-03-08 18:10 < NotACow> ei != ie
2008-03-08 18:11 < NotACow> peida != pedia
2008-03-08 18:11 < Aqwis2> i think you will have to ask an oper to create a redirect
2008-03-08 18:11 < Aqwis2> but they're not likely to create one for a misspelling imho
2008-03-08 18:19 < Pilotguy> GO TAR HEELS!!!!!
2008-03-08 18:20 < White_Cat> Pilotguy you were saying something about me earlier on?
2008-03-08 18:22 < Pilotguy> If you mean like the one you saw two seconds ago in the other channel then yes
2008-03-08 18:22 < White_Cat> no
2008-03-08 18:22 < White_Cat> the one before
2008-03-08 18:22 < White_Cat> I recall you talking to me
2008-03-08 18:22 < White_Cat> but I was too sleepy to make sense of it
2008-03-08 18:22 < fruitbag> What are others' opinions on Safari?
2008-03-08 18:22 < Pilotguy> Well I don't recall me talking to you
2008-03-08 18:22 < Pilotguy> run along now
2008-03-08 18:24 < Gazimoff> I feel mean now :/
2008-03-08 18:26 < Gazimoff> Someone with a blank user talk page and the first post on it is a request to stop editing an article and instead use the talk page to discuss the contentious edits.
2008-03-08 18:26 < fruitbag> Hey
2008-03-08 18:26 < fruitbag> Does anyone here know anything about TGP Sites?
2008-03-08 18:44 < aaaaaaaa> السلام عليكم
2008-03-08 18:47 < Warpath> O_O
2008-03-08 18:48 < Rinn> Caoaca uaiba?
2008-03-08 18:50 < Ryan_wp> Good evening.
2008-03-08 18:50 < Pilotguy> NOM NOM NOM
2008-03-08 18:51 * Ryan_wp is bored
2008-03-08 18:51 < Pilotguy> {{sofixit}}
2008-03-08 19:00 < Fahrenheit_451> I would like to report an abusive admin.
2008-03-08 19:01 < Pilotguy> Fahrenheit_451- lol
2008-03-08 19:02 < Fahrenheit_451> NotASpy banned me from wikipedia-en after I derogatorily commented on his very unjust deletion of an image.
2008-03-08 19:02 < Fahrenheit_451> I think his real nick is Nick on wikipedia.
2008-03-08 19:02 < Pilotguy> Fahrenheit_451- Do tell me what is abusive about that
2008-03-08 19:03 < Pilotguy> Fahrenheit_451- And anyway you want to complain in #wikimedia-ops instead
2008-03-08 19:03 < Arfdee> hi
2008-03-08 19:03 < Pilotguy> bye
2008-03-08 19:03 < ST47> bye...
2008-03-08 19:03 < Pilotguy> I said that
2008-03-08 19:03 < ST47> me too!
2008-03-08 19:03 < Fahrenheit_451> A user had uploaded a duplicate image 3 years after I did. I asked for it to be deleted and NotASpy deleted the image I uploaded.
2008-03-08 19:03 < Pilotguy> :O
2008-03-08 19:03 < Fahrenheit_451> He thought it that was cute.
2008-03-08 19:04 < Aqwis2> your image had the worst file name
2008-03-08 19:04 < Pilotguy> Fahrenheit_451- You'd might wish to talk to him directly and not "derogatorily comment on his very unjust deletion of an image"
2008-03-08 19:04 < Aqwis2> i'm not sure what you're so annoyed about
2008-03-08 19:04 < Fahrenheit_451> EMielke vs. Erich_Mielke?
2008-03-08 19:04 < Pilotguy> Fahrenheit_451- Shit gets added and removed all the time
2008-03-08 19:04 < NotASpy> Fahrenheit_451: as I said, it's a better image and a better filename. I've included the entire history from the old image you uploaded, I don't see what the problem is here.
2008-03-08 19:04 < Ryan_wp> Also, if they're duplicate images, I don't see why it matters which one gets deleted...
2008-03-08 19:04 < Pilotguy> Fahrenheit_451- It's called wikipedia
2008-03-08 19:05 < Fahrenheit_451> What are you referring to?
2008-03-08 19:07 < Fahrenheit_451> One other little problem.
2008-03-08 19:08 < Fahrenheit_451> Another action by our friend NotASpy.
2008-03-08 19:08 < Fahrenheit_451> He banned me from #wikipedia-en
2008-03-08 19:08 * Pilotguy huggles Fahrenheit_451 and NotASpy
2008-03-08 19:08 < Pilotguy> GROUP HUG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
2008-03-08 19:08 < Fahrenheit_451> Real nice guy. Someone we really need as an admin.
2008-03-08 19:09 < ST47> Go cry elsewhere
2008-03-08 19:09 < Pilotguy> YEAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
2008-03-08 19:09 < Fahrenheit_451> Not crying.
2008-03-08 19:09 < NotASpy> Fahrenheit_451: [23:48:49] <Fahrenheit_451> NotASpy: You are an asshole
2008-03-08 19:09 < Fahrenheit_451> I said that.
2008-03-08 19:09 < NotASpy> Fahrenheit_451: a simple apology will let you back into -en.
2008-03-08 19:09 < Ryan_wp> That's why you got banned. ;)
2008-03-08 19:09 < Fahrenheit_451> I am not bargaining with you, you are quite nasty.
2008-03-08 19:10 < Fahrenheit_451> Is your user name on wikipedia Nick?
2008-03-08 19:10 < NotASpy> Fahrenheit_451: yes.
2008-03-08 19:10 < Fahrenheit_451> Thanks.
2008-03-08 19:11 < Fahrenheit_451> You would not mind my reporting your very kind benevolent actions to Jimmy Wales.?
2008-03-08 19:11 < Pilotguy> lol
2008-03-08 19:11 < Fahrenheit_451> A friend of mine.
2008-03-08 19:11 < NotASpy> Fahrenheit_451: could you possibly fix the fair use rationales on [[Image:Erich Fritz Emil Mielke.jpg]] so it doesn't end up being deleted.
2008-03-08 19:11 < Pilotguy> You mean the dude who knocks right-wing chicks up
2008-03-08 19:12 < Fahrenheit_451> My friend who I interviewed four times on my radio program.
2008-03-08 19:12 * ST47 is amused
2008-03-08 19:12 < NotASpy> Fahrenheit_451: you can do whatever you like. Quite why anybody would get so worked up over an image is beyond me, but carry on.
2008-03-08 19:13 < Fahrenheit_451> You are the guy who got worked up and misused your "authority".
2008-03-08 19:13 * Kamping_Kaiser looks around - does anyone else see name dropping? i think i spotted some....
2008-03-08 19:13 < Fahrenheit_451> right.
2008-03-08 19:14 < NotASpy> Fahrenheit_451: you reported a duplicate file, I deleted one file and kept the file with the most useful filename. How does that translate to abuse of authority ?
2008-03-08 19:14 < Fahrenheit_451> NotASpy: It was arbitrary. A perfectly good file was already extant.
2008-03-08 19:15 < Fahrenheit_451> Then, I derogatorily comment on your action and your solution is to ban me.
2008-03-08 19:15 < Fahrenheit_451> Wow. That's real power.
2008-03-08 19:16 < ST47> Can we ban him from here too?
2008-03-08 19:16 < Fahrenheit_451> NotASpy: Is that the reason you wanted to be an admin?
2008-03-08 19:16 < Kamping_Kaiser> forward to -ops perhaps.
2008-03-08 19:16 < NotASpy> Fahrenheit_451: there was a couple of differences, the newer file was cropped to remove a black line, and it had a more useful filename. That's what we generally do on Wikipedia, and especially on Commons when a newer file is uploaded. I'll drop Jimbo an e-mail and have him explain that to you, shall I ?
2008-03-08 19:17 < Fahrenheit_451> You may. But, I will explain my observations to him. Without your permission.
2008-03-08 19:17 < NotASpy> very good.
2008-03-08 19:18 * Kamping_Kaiser wonders what Fahrenheit_451 will do now he has permission
2008-03-08 19:18 < Fahrenheit_451> What permission?
2008-03-08 19:18 < Kamping_Kaiser> <NotASpy> very good.
2008-03-08 19:19 < NotASpy> Fahrenheit_451: you've also got my permission to quote everything I've said. Especially the line where I quoted you calling me an asshole, we wouldn't want that unfortunate little bit of abuse to be left out now, would we.
2008-03-08 19:19 < Fahrenheit_451> ?
2008-03-08 19:19 < Fahrenheit_451> That will be included.
2008-03-08 19:19 * pengo yawns
2008-03-08 19:19 < Fahrenheit_451> I stand behind that characterization.
2008-03-08 19:19 < NotASpy> jolly good.
2008-03-08 19:19 < Kamping_Kaiser> pengo, hello :)
2008-03-08 19:19 < pengo> hi Kamping_Kaiser. how are you?
2008-03-08 19:20 < Fahrenheit_451> You are an abusive admin.
2008-03-08 19:20 < Kamping_Kaiser> pengo, still nice and cool - heat of the day hasnt kicked in yet thankfuly
2008-03-08 19:20 < Ryan_wp> If you believe someone made a mistake, it is always a good idea to go about telling them politely. I'm just pointing out the obvious here. ;)
2008-03-08 19:20 < pengo> Kamping_Kaiser: i'm fearing the heat too
2008-03-08 19:20 < Ryan_wp> Ah, much better.
