2008-02-18 15:53 < TheLetterE_away> dircbot wants to know why they were kickbanned
2008-02-18 15:54 < kibble> hehe
2008-02-18 15:54 < kibble> "farting"
2008-02-18 15:55 < quanticle> So why did Trickz get kickbanned?
2008-02-18 15:55 < kibble> quanticle: he didn't
2008-02-18 15:55 < kibble> he got k-lined
2008-02-18 15:55 < quanticle> kibble: Isn't that the same thing?
2008-02-18 15:55 < kim_bruning> quanticle, holy moly, not kb'ed, K-lined
2008-02-18 15:55 < kibble> quanticle: no
2008-02-18 15:55 < kibble> k-lined is done by staff
2008-02-18 15:55 < quanticle> kibble: What's the difference?
2008-02-18 15:56 < quanticle> Oh.
2008-02-18 15:56 < kim_bruning> quanticle, kb: "please leave the channel and don't come back"
2008-02-18 15:56 < kibble> kicks them off the network and I think bans them for a certain amount of time
2008-02-18 15:56 < jerkface03> i think k-line expires after 48 hours or something
2008-02-18 15:56 < Starnestommy> quanticle: k-lines keep the user from even connecting
2008-02-18 15:56 < kim_bruning> quanticle, k-line: "please don't ever use our irc network again"
2008-02-18 15:56 < Starnestommy> jerkface03: it varies
2008-02-18 15:56 < quanticle> Wow. That's hardcore pwnage.
2008-02-18 15:56 < kibble> heh
2008-02-18 15:56 < Starnestommy> anywhere between a couple seconds and infinity
2008-02-18 15:56 < quanticle> Was he running an open relay or something?
2008-02-18 15:56 < jerkface03> who cares, k-lines are useless
2008-02-18 15:56 < jerkface03> he'll just get on tor and reconnect
2008-02-18 15:57 < kibble> tor has been blocked quite a bit lately
2008-02-18 15:57 < Gracenotes> does freenode allow Tor now?
2008-02-18 15:57 < TheLetterE_away> ahh
2008-02-18 15:57 < TheLetterE_away> im lagging
2008-02-18 15:57 < kibble> too much abuse by people like that
2008-02-18 15:57 < quanticle> jerkface03: You can just preemptively block ToR exit nodes.
2008-02-18 15:57 < kibble> Gracenotes: sometimes
2008-02-18 15:57 < kibble> depends on the level of abuse
2008-02-18 15:57 < njan> Gracenotes, tor's currently blocked.
2008-02-18 15:57 < quanticle> Yeah. I'm lagging too.
2008-02-18 15:57 < Gracenotes> they haven't unbanned it since the logging incidents, right?
2008-02-18 15:57 < Starnestommy> gpg-tor's still open
2008-02-18 15:57 < jerkface03> lol
2008-02-18 15:57 < jerkface03> what are the logging incidents?
2008-02-18 15:57 < jerkface03> oh
2008-02-18 15:57 < wimt> Gracenotes, they have but it's been abused by k-line evaders
2008-02-18 15:57 < quanticle> Starnestommy: Well not for long... heh.
2008-02-18 15:57 < jerkface03> nm
2008-02-18 15:57 < Starnestommy> it was unbanned after the irseek one
2008-02-18 15:57 < jerkface03> i know what you're talking about
2008-02-18 15:58 < quanticle> What were the logging incidents?
2008-02-18 15:58 < Starnestommy> then rebanned because some troll kept using it for k-line evasion
2008-02-18 15:58 < Gracenotes> jerkface03: yes, as jerkface03 mentioned... uh :)
2008-02-18 15:58 * NotACow has been secretly publiclly logging this channel for at least two years
2008-02-18 15:58 < Gracenotes> hm, s/jerkface03/wimt/
2008-02-18 15:58 < Gracenotes> not a global replace, though, just the first instance
2008-02-18 15:58 < Starnestommy> http://blog.freenode.net/?p=62
2008-02-18 15:58 < wimt> Gracenotes, lol :-p
2008-02-18 15:59 * Crazytales has been privately logging this channel for some time, but it is scattered among about 5 different HDDs
2008-02-18 15:59 < NotACow> Crazytales: i publish the logs to the freenet.
2008-02-18 15:59 < Crazytales> freenet?
2008-02-18 16:00 < Taggard> It's some weird anonymous thing.
2008-02-18 16:00 < Taggard> Sorta kinda like to rbut not really.
2008-02-18 16:00 < NotACow> you can read the if you can guess the 80-character random key that they're published under :)
2008-02-18 16:00 < kim_bruning> NotACow, Oh.
2008-02-18 16:00 < kim_bruning> NotACow, so what's the point?
2008-02-18 16:00 < NotACow> and, furthermore, find a freenet host that actually has the content, which is improbable :)
2008-02-18 16:01 < quanticle> NotACow: How do you secretly publicly log an IRC channel?
2008-02-18 16:01 < NotACow> and also get beyond the fact that i'm lying :)
2008-02-18 16:01 < kim_bruning> NotACow, very funny :-P
2008-02-18 16:01 < Gracenotes> oh, an ingeniously plotted hypothetical situation
2008-02-18 16:01 < NotACow> or m aybe i'm lying now!
2008-02-18 16:01 < NotACow> YOU WILL NEVER KNOW
2008-02-18 16:01 < NotACow> i know, you know, that i'm not telling the truth
2008-02-18 16:01 < Demi> everything NotACow says is a lie
2008-02-18 16:01 * Gracenotes goes about guessing the 80-character random key
2008-02-18 16:01 < NotACow> you know, i know, that they don't have any clue
2008-02-18 16:02 < Demi> *everything*
2008-02-18 16:02 < quanticle> NotACow: This statement is a lie?
2008-02-18 16:02 < kim_bruning> Demi, wasn't that a paradox?
2008-02-18 16:02 < NotACow> kim_bruning: only if demi is notaow.
2008-02-18 16:02 < NotACow> er
2008-02-18 16:02 < NotACow> notacow
2008-02-18 16:02 < NotACow> it's only a paradox if i say it.
2008-02-18 16:02 < NotACow> if he says it, it's just false. or not.
2008-02-18 16:02 * TheLetterE_away taps people on the back and says Keep it PG
2008-02-18 16:02 < Demi> just don't say it
2008-02-18 16:02 * NotACow sentences kim_bruning to a weeked on the island of knights and knaves.
2008-02-18 16:02 < Demi> or it will crash IRC
2008-02-18 16:03 < kim_bruning> NotACow, that doesn't sound TOO bad?
2008-02-18 16:03 < Demi> you've obviously never had dinner with philosophers
2008-02-18 16:03 < NotACow> Demi: just don't let them hog all the forks.
2008-02-18 16:03 < kim_bruning> Demi, I did, I went home hungry!
2008-02-18 16:03 < NotACow> kim_bruning: you let them hog the forks.
2008-02-18 16:04 < NotACow> were they having spaghetti?
2008-02-18 16:04 < kim_bruning> NotACow, I was young and naieve!
2008-02-18 16:04 < NotACow> (do they still use that example in OS class?)
2008-02-18 16:04 < kim_bruning> I saw it in the java tutorial circa 1995
2008-02-18 16:04 < Gracenotes> NotACow: spaghetti? of course not, it's lo mein. All those Italian philosophers are sophists, you know
2008-02-18 16:04 < Demi> NotACow - they do, in fact i was helping someone with such a homework problem in another channel just the other day
2008-02-18 16:05 < NotACow> Demi: it's not an easy problem and it will never cease to be relevant in OS design.
2008-02-18 16:05 < NotACow> ah, gracenotes is not of the initiated.
2008-02-18 16:06 < Gracenotes> initiated? sounds scary :<
2008-02-18 16:06 < kim_bruning> Gracenotes, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dining_philosophers
2008-02-18 16:06 < Gracenotes> yeah, I know
2008-02-18 16:06 < kim_bruning> Oh cool :-)
2008-02-18 16:06 < kim_bruning> the lo mein went over my head though
2008-02-18 16:06 < Gracenotes> deadlock, livelock, the need for properly coordinated synchronizers, semaphores, CAS, and so on and so forth..
2008-02-18 16:07 < NotACow> http://www.overcomingbias.com/2007/04/knowing_about_b.html
2008-02-18 16:07 < kim_bruning> ooooohhhhh
2008-02-18 16:07 < kim_bruning> the lo mein makessense again
2008-02-18 16:07 < NotACow> you can always tell if someone has had at elast an introductory CS education if they know what a "dining philospher" is and why they are relevant to managing tape drives
2008-02-18 16:08 < Gracenotes> even abstract queued synchronizer :)
2008-02-18 16:08 < NotACow> hm, lo mein is spaghetti :)
2008-02-18 16:08 < Gracenotes> but that's more of a Java thing
2008-02-18 16:08 < Gracenotes> NotACow: it is. You're showing your pro-Italian bias by calling it spaghetti, though
2008-02-18 16:09 < IceKarma> I learned multithreaded programming the "hard way": i.e., making all the mistakes, then having to figure her own way out of them
2008-02-18 16:09 < Demi> it's false that pasta came from china
2008-02-18 16:09 < IceKarma> I think I made every standard MT mistake, and invented a few new ones
2008-02-18 16:09 * publunch loves publunch.
2008-02-18 16:09 < Gracenotes> Demi: o rly
2008-02-18 16:10 < Gracenotes> I had no idea >.>
2008-02-18 16:10 < Demi> the chinese are like chekhov from star trek, they think everything came from china
2008-02-18 16:10 < kim_bruning> IceKarma, <grin>
2008-02-18 16:10 < Demi> IceKarma - the whole multithreaded thing is a mistake
2008-02-18 16:10 < publunch> Yeah, and I know that everything comes from Britland.
2008-02-18 16:11 < kim_bruning> publunch, obviously everything was invented in america
2008-02-18 16:11 < IceKarma> I did get a panicked phone call from my colleagues one day who were misunderstanding a stack trace, and mistakenly thought there was a bug in my spinlock_lock() function, written in assembly, in which I used an undocumented Intel instruction. ;)
2008-02-18 16:11 < AAA^> question
2008-02-18 16:11 < AAA^> how often is this channel trolled?
2008-02-18 16:11 < kim_bruning> anwer
2008-02-18 16:11 < Crazytales> AAA^: Quite often
2008-02-18 16:11 < NotASpider> daily
2008-02-18 16:11 < Demi> including this time?
2008-02-18 16:11 < kim_bruning> IceKarma, ok, scary
2008-02-18 16:11 < AAA^> well above...
2008-02-18 16:12 < AAA^> <SiGO> Where is w00t?
2008-02-18 16:12 < AAA^> and he was one of the flooders
2008-02-18 16:12 < Gracenotes> yeah
2008-02-18 16:12 < Gracenotes> I wasn't paying attention then
2008-02-18 16:12 < publunch> miaow!
2008-02-18 16:12 < AAA^> if someone says that, you should ban him and set +i
2008-02-18 16:12 < kim_bruning> IceKarma, why did you use an undocumented instruction... also... how do you know it exists if it's undocumented?
2008-02-18 16:12 < AAA^> wait!
2008-02-18 16:12 < AAA^> who can configure antispameta?
2008-02-18 16:12 < publunch> God existed long before there was documentation.
2008-02-18 16:12 * kim_bruning has avoided x86 assembly so far
2008-02-18 16:12 < kibble> AAA^: see #Wikimedia-ops
2008-02-18 16:12 < IceKarma> kim_bruning, because it was one instruction to convert the carry flag into a suitable value for returning as a bool
2008-02-18 16:13 < AAA^> so if a stranger (not an active user) says "w00t" or "woot", AntiSpamMeta will ping all ops
2008-02-18 16:13 < kim_bruning> w00t!
2008-02-18 16:13 * kim_bruning ducks
2008-02-18 16:13 < IceKarma> kim_bruning, the instruction in question has existed since the very first run of 8086 chips, but Intel apparently forgot to document it
2008-02-18 16:13 < kim_bruning> isn't that a rather common word?
2008-02-18 16:13 < kim_bruning> IceKarma, so how did you learn of it?
2008-02-18 16:14 < Crazytales> w00t I'm getting laptops soon
2008-02-18 16:14 < Demi> are we talking about the w00t instruction?
2008-02-18 16:14 < Crazytales> (liek something like that)
2008-02-18 16:14 < IceKarma> kim_bruning, a companion file to Ralph Brown's Interrupt List, that discussed {un,under, mis}documented instructions on various Intel and related processors
2008-02-18 16:14 < Crazytales> How'd he find out about it then>?
2008-02-18 16:14 < kim_bruning> IceKarma, heh, I wonder how opcodes are implemented on an intel ^^;;
2008-02-18 16:14 < AAA^> wait, i have an idea!
2008-02-18 16:14 < NotACow> woot
2008-02-18 16:15 * AAA^ goatse Dave2
2008-02-18 16:15 < AAA^> goatses, even
2008-02-18 16:15 < kibble> O_O
2008-02-18 16:15 < IceKarma> kim_bruning, a wide variety of ways, in the last 30+ years ;)
2008-02-18 16:15 < kim_bruning> AAA^, scoot, kid
2008-02-18 16:15 < AAA^> Dave2 has a goatse fetish
2008-02-18 16:15 < AAA^> so it's likely to grab his attention
2008-02-18 16:15 < kim_bruning> IceKarma, that's not very enlightening. The last time I really wrote ASM was on a 6502 :-P
2008-02-18 16:15 < IceKarma> Crazytales, I suspect some really bored programmer(s) decided to see if they could discern any effect from instructions in "holes" in the opcode tables
2008-02-18 16:16 < IceKarma> was probably quite tedious, too; on modern CPUs, you have "invalid instruction" traps, but on the 8086, a bad instruction would just hang the CPU
2008-02-18 16:16 < AAA^> Dave2?
2008-02-18 16:16 < NotACow> IceKarma: i used to have a VAX-11 reference manual
2008-02-18 16:16 < kim_bruning> IceKarma, so now intel needs to support old undocumented opcodes too?
2008-02-18 16:17 < IceKarma> kim_bruning, they've documented some of them, in the intervening years
2008-02-18 16:17 < NotACow> IceKarma: certain things in the architecture were incompletely defined
2008-02-18 16:17 < NotACow> IceKarma: some thing had "unspecified" behavior and others "undefined" behavior
2008-02-18 16:17 < IceKarma> kim_bruning, as well as providing an explicit "undefined instruction" instruction, so that you don't have to rely on "reserved" opcodes for such an effect
2008-02-18 16:17 < NotACow> IceKarma: there were limits on what could happen with "unspecified" behavior
2008-02-18 16:17 < NotACow> IceKarma: there were no limits on "undefined" behavior
2008-02-18 16:18 < AAA^> Crazytales: more like "where's w00t gone?"
2008-02-18 16:18 < NotACow> you could rely on the fact that "Unspecified"behavior would not throw a machine check, for example
2008-02-18 16:18 < NotACow> but it was permissible, within the architecture, for "undefined" behavior to cause the processor to catch on fire
2008-02-18 16:19 < Demi> HCF
2008-02-18 16:19 < kim_bruning> did anyone ever manage to do that?
2008-02-18 16:19 < NotACow> kim_bruning: yes
2008-02-18 16:19 < kim_bruning> OMG
2008-02-18 16:19 < NotACow> one of Digital's early machines had a "halt and catch fire" instruction
2008-02-18 16:19 < NotACow> HCF
2008-02-18 16:19 < kim_bruning> hahahaha
2008-02-18 16:19 < Starnestommy> I suppose that would be useful for bombs
2008-02-18 16:20 < IceKarma> kim_bruning, anyway, the only reasons I wasn't hung out to dry: 1/ I included a comment like "undocumented - SETALC", which yielded the right result on the first Google match, 2/ I lived just minutes from the office, 3/ my coworkers were completely off-base as to what the bug actually was
2008-02-18 16:20 < Starnestommy> I find lp0 on fire a bit funnier
2008-02-18 16:20 < IceKarma> I thought HCF was a 6502 instruction
2008-02-18 16:21 < artfullylost> Mirana, sorry, I thought you were a dude...
2008-02-18 16:21 < Miranda> artfullylost: quit trolling
2008-02-18 16:21 < artfullylost> Miranda*
2008-02-18 16:21 < artfullylost> I'm apologizing!
2008-02-18 16:21 < artfullylost> That's not trolling.
2008-02-18 16:21 < artfullylost> From the bottom of my heart.
2008-02-18 16:21 < kim_bruning> IceKarma, why would you be hung out to dry? :-P
2008-02-18 16:22 < Rinn> Isn't Miranda a pretty recognizably female name?
2008-02-18 16:22 < zvook> aye
2008-02-18 16:22 < Miranda> Rinn: yes
2008-02-18 16:22 < kim_bruning> Rinn, why?
2008-02-18 16:22 < artfullylost> Rinn : Yes, but others think "Stacey" is too.
2008-02-18 16:22 < Miranda> but artfullylost is trolling
2008-02-18 16:22 < kim_bruning> oh that's why
2008-02-18 16:22 < Demi> it could be a last name
2008-02-18 16:22 < kim_bruning> true
2008-02-18 16:22 < artfullylost> Miranda rights... you know....
2008-02-18 16:22 < NotACow> one of my computers at home suffers from the F00F bug
2008-02-18 16:22 < kim_bruning> or a favorite character
2008-02-18 16:22 < AAA^> FISH STICKS http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Business_year
2008-02-18 16:22 < IceKarma> kim_bruning, said coworkers were rather unhappy that I used an undocumented instruction
2008-02-18 16:22 * Demi is a recognizably female name
2008-02-18 16:22 < kim_bruning> or... miranda rights
2008-02-18 16:22 < kim_bruning> Demi, it is?
2008-02-18 16:23 < kim_bruning> Just means half or small :-P
2008-02-18 16:23 < zvook> demi moore and...no one else really?
2008-02-18 16:23 < artfullylost> I honestly thought he was a dude. Sorry.
2008-02-18 16:23 < Demi> sure, though my nick doesn't come from the name
2008-02-18 16:23 < artfullylost> My mistake, I admit, I madea a mistake.
2008-02-18 16:23 < IceKarma> kim_bruning, my opinion was that they shouldn't have been poking around in code they had _zero_ clue about. ;)
2008-02-18 16:24 < kim_bruning> artfullylost, welcome to the internet, where all the men are men, all the women are men, and all the little girls are FBI agents
2008-02-18 16:24 < IceKarma> kim_bruning, I mean, never mind not being able to grasp how atomic operations work, one of the people involved actually asked me if the reason I wrote the routine in assembly was so the compiler wouldn't insert task-switch instructions (!!!) into my code
2008-02-18 16:24 < artfullylost> kim_bruning, I know a stacey that is a dude. I know a Miranda that is a sort of... in between at the moment.
2008-02-18 16:24 < artfullylost> It's a mistake anyone could have made!
2008-02-18 16:24 < kim_bruning> artfullylost, duh
2008-02-18 16:25 < NotACow> miranda was a rapist
2008-02-18 16:25 < IceKarma> artfullylost, now now, I'm sure this "Miranda" you know has a definite opinion on their gender
2008-02-18 16:25 < kim_bruning> IceKarma, erm, they wanted to learn, at least
2008-02-18 16:25 < artfullylost> Seriously, I try to apologize, and miranda breaks out the trollerskates.
2008-02-18 16:25 < quanticle> Demi: Really? I though Demi meant "half"?
2008-02-18 16:25 < Demi> it does
2008-02-18 16:25 < Demi> it's also a name
2008-02-18 16:25 < Rinn> I've never seen a male Stacey.
2008-02-18 16:25 < artfullylost> IceKarma : She's "2/3 woman, with a third that's standing up in it's defense!"

2008-02-18 16:35 < artfullylost> Gracenotes : There are some differences, but I figure if BMW knew, they'd get the German goverment to sanction wikipedia or something.

2008-02-18 16:35 < Gracenotes> yeah

2008-02-18 16:46 * cremepuff222 is creamy.
2008-02-18 16:46 < zocky> anyway, why would anybody have any hopes to raise about it when it doesn't work?
2008-02-18 16:47 < shimgray> the hopes are raised that tweaking it may mean it does work
2008-02-18 16:47 < IceKarma> zocky, well, if they find something that actually -works- for preventing HIV transmission, they have a great carrier for it now
2008-02-18 16:48 < zocky> IceKarma, like a condom?
2008-02-18 16:49 < eth01> :/
2008-02-18 16:49 < IceKarma> zocky, well, I was meaning within the context of a topical cream
2008-02-18 16:50 < Demi> i hope we never see a world where there is more than one way to prevent HIV transmission, since we have condoms
2008-02-18 16:51 < IceKarma> good luck with dealing with those religious objections to contraception :/
2008-02-18 16:51 < NotACow> contraceptive objections to religion?

2008-02-18 16:53 < NotASpider> no, objections to religious contraception
2008-02-18 16:53 < NotASpider> "it doesn't work"
2008-02-18 16:54 < Demi> i disagree. the "ballcutters" were a 1930s sect whose religious beliefs included removal of the testes and hysterectomies. they were kind of short-lived, though.
2008-02-18 16:55 < kim_bruning> Demi, I wonder why :-P
2008-02-18 16:55 < Crazytales> Demi: Ballcutters?
2008-02-18 16:56 < WikiHelper> has there been a sudden burst of trolling o.o
2008-02-18 16:56 < shimgray> Demi: Evolution took care of that one.
2008-02-18 16:57 < NotACow> history is replete with shortlived cults that practiced universal celibacy
2008-02-18 16:57 * WikiHelper wonders why there are 2 ops in the channel and if he has missed out on any 'fun' ;)
2008-02-18 16:57 < Crazytales> n -o
2008-02-18 16:58 < NotACow> the shakers were an unusually successful celibacy cult
2008-02-18 16:58 < quanticle> NotACow: The Shakers? As opposed to the Movers?
2008-02-18 16:58 < kim_bruning> NotACow, what was their secret for success?
2008-02-18 16:58 < zvook> i presume reproduction is a better proseltyzer than conversion
2008-02-18 16:58 < kim_bruning> quanticle, my first thought too :-P
2008-02-18 16:59 < quanticle> kim_bruning: Naw, I've heard of the Shakers before, but the pun was irresistible.
2008-02-18 16:59 < NotASpider> fakers evidently
2008-02-18 17:00 < quanticle> NotASpider: Movers, Shakers, and Fakers?
2008-02-18 17:00 < quanticle> NotASpider: Sounds like a band...
2008-02-18 17:00 < Crazytales> lol
2008-02-18 17:01 < NotACow> quanticle: it's a religious sect in the US. mandatory celibates.
2008-02-18 17:01 < mavhc> didn't last long
2008-02-18 17:01 < NotACow> kim_bruning: they adopted a lot and accepted converts
2008-02-18 17:01 < NotACow> mavhc: they're still around, actually
2008-02-18 17:01 < NotASpider> yet, they still exist
2008-02-18 17:01 < NotACow> there are four shakers left, living maine.
2008-02-18 17:01 < NotACow> er, in maine
2008-02-18 17:01 < NotASpider> mainers!
2008-02-18 17:01 < mavhc> I'm all for it, every religious person should join
2008-02-18 17:01 < Crazytales> mavhc: Lol
2008-02-18 17:02 < mavhc> it might have some intended side effects, but it's for the best
2008-02-18 17:03 < quanticle> mavhc: That'd be the most hilarious way of getting rid of religion: with evolution!
2008-02-18 17:03 < mavhc> ironically religions evolve and have survival of the fittest
2008-02-18 17:03 < kenlyric> you need violence
2008-02-18 17:03 < NotACow> the shakers had a massive impact on the design of furniture and usful objects in the united states
2008-02-18 17:04 < NotACow> and on architecture
2008-02-18 17:04 < quanticle> NotACow: Were they like the Amish, in that regard?
2008-02-18 17:04 < mavhc> yeah, but they didn't have as many tv episodes about them
2008-02-18 17:05 < Lycurgus> shaking, twirling, trancing in general are common to most of the prior religions
2008-02-18 17:05 < Luna-San> Techo is a religion?

2008-02-18 17:06 < quanticle> Luna-San: You beat me to it...
2008-02-18 17:06 * Luna-San purr
2008-02-18 17:07 * quanticle hugs Luna-San
2008-02-18 17:07 < NotACow> "Managing without lubrication is the dream of every design engineer. With modern materials, polymer plain bearings make this a reality." <- is this neutral?
2008-02-18 17:07 < Gracenotes> hm
2008-02-18 17:07 < NotACow> quanticle: except that the shakers did not reject technology.
2008-02-18 17:08 < mavhc> it's whimsical
2008-02-18 17:08 < NotACow> quanticle: instead, they embraced and advanced it
2008-02-18 17:08 < Lycurgus> NAC: it would be in past tense with a ref.
2008-02-18 17:08 < quanticle> NotACow: Its neutral, and vaguely disturbing...
2008-02-18 17:08 < Luna-San> Wouldn't it be easier to just say "Polymer plain bearings do not require gobs of lube."?
2008-02-18 17:08 < Luna-San> Although that is not nearly as romantic-sounding.
2008-02-18 17:09 < NotACow> Phosphor bronze is an alloy of copper with 3.5 to 10% of tin and a significant phosphorus content of up to 1%. The phosphorus is added as deoxidizing agent during melting. These alloys are notable for their toughness, strength, low coefficient of friction, and fine grain. The phosphorus also improves the fluidity of the molten metal and thereby improves the castability, and improves mechanical properties by cleaning up the grain bou
2008-02-18 17:09 < mavhc> rewrite it as a trailer: In a world without lubrication, one man, one a mission to make things turn
2008-02-18 17:10 < NotACow> quick, rearrange those sentences into a coherent paragraph!
2008-02-18 17:10 < Luna-San> mavhc: haha
2008-02-18 17:10 * Luna-San also belatedly hugs quanticle back
2008-02-18 17:10 < NotACow> actually the entire article sucks ass
2008-02-18 17:11 < NotACow> it's as if someone stuck a set of facts to a bunch of darts and then threw them at a blank article template.
2008-02-18 17:11 < NotACow> and just left them whereever they stuck
2008-02-18 17:11 < quanticle> mavhc: Sounds like the tagline for a porno
2008-02-18 17:11 < NotACow> "The phosphor-bronze alloy can also be used in electrical circuits due to its low resistance and high conductivity."
2008-02-18 17:11 < NotACow> low resistance AND high conductivity
2008-02-18 17:11 < NotACow> what an unusual combination!
2008-02-18 17:12 < mavhc> they go together like velcro, and the other half of the velcro
2008-02-18 17:12 < Scarian> NotACow: Did you remove that paint from my cheeks from earlier?
2008-02-18 17:13 < NotACow> Scarian: i have no idea what you're talking about
2008-02-18 17:13 < Scarian> * NotACow {#wikipedia} paints little smiley faces on Scarian's cheeks while he is away
2008-02-18 17:13 * Scarian sighs...
2008-02-18 17:13 < mavhc> another sex game gone wrong?
2008-02-18 17:13 < quanticle> mavhc: O_o
2008-02-18 17:13 < Scarian> mavhc: Good God, no.

2008-02-18 17:26 < NotACow> J_Milburn: there are no legitimate requests.

2008-02-18 17:27 < NotACow> GDonato: nobody with any sense does
2008-02-18 17:27 * NotASpy is senseless then.
2008-02-18 17:27 < J_Milburn> NotACow: On this channel, no, there are few. On others, yes, there are.
2008-02-18 17:27 < GDonato> I could either /unstalk them or /ignore NotACow
2008-02-18 17:27 < GDonato> I wouldn't want to miss drama so I'll unstalk then
2008-02-18 17:28 < NotASpy> both options == half the fun.
2008-02-18 17:28 < Scarian> NotASpy: Are you drunk?
2008-02-18 17:28 < NotASpy> I'm not, but my bovine namesake might be.

2008-02-18 17:29 < Scarian> Oh Gosh damn it...
2008-02-18 17:29 < Scarian> NotASpy: I do apologise, my friend.

2008-02-18 17:29 < NotASpy> it's OK.
2008-02-18 17:29 < NotACow> Scarian: not presently
2008-02-18 17:29 < Scarian> NotACow: Well perhaps an IRC channel isn't the best of places to be if you're getting drunk :)
2008-02-18 17:31 < NotACow> why not?
2008-02-18 17:31 < NotACow> i've been in irc drunk plenty of time
2008-02-18 17:31 < NotACow> nothing seriously bad has ever come of it

2008-02-18 17:35 < NotACow> my driveway is all icy
2008-02-18 17:35 < lucasbfr> can someone mute her :x
2008-02-18 17:35 < NotACow> and i don't know where to find any?
2008-02-18 17:35 < NotACow> COME WITNESS THE VIOLENCE INHERENT IN THE SYSTEM!
2008-02-18 17:35 < jeremyb> google hardware $zipcode
2008-02-18 17:36 < NotASpy> sadly, we don't have stock of salt-sand mix in -admins. Sorry.
2008-02-18 17:36 < NotACow> but you people are supposed to know everything.
2008-02-18 17:36 < jeremyb> hah
2008-02-18 17:36 < NotACow> useless scumwads
2008-02-18 17:36 < NotACow> ought to ban the lot of you
2008-02-18 17:36 < mavhc> so either you're being silly, or attempting to make the command useless
2008-02-18 17:36 < NotACow> jeremyb: all the hwardware stores are out of stock here
2008-02-18 17:36 < NotASpy> NotACow: we're all seeing and all knowing, not all doing.
2008-02-18 17:36 < NotACow> mavhc: it *is* useless
2008-02-18 17:37 < Snowolf> NotACow: it pings severals users for not purpose whatsoever
2008-02-18 17:37 < NotACow> mavhc: and i don't ascribe to that stupid policy about disruption to make a point
2008-02-18 17:37 < NotACow> Snowolf: there's a purpose!
2008-02-18 17:37 < NotACow> Snowolf: there are several purposes. you just don't approve of them.
2008-02-18 17:37 < mavhc> it creates drama?
2008-02-18 17:37 < jeremyb> NotACow: make a todo list for next time and put salt-sand on it?
2008-02-18 17:38 < NotACow> Snowolf: just because you don't LIKE a purpose doesn't mean it doesn't exist.
2008-02-18 17:38 < jeremyb> NotACow: then have a bot stalking nws for warnings/watches
2008-02-18 17:38 < NotACow> jeremyb: please feel free to develop that application for me.
2008-02-18 17:38 < Scarian> NotACow: Why do you do *this*?
2008-02-18 17:38 * AppleBoy creates drama very well
2008-02-18 17:38 < NotACow> jeremyb: but first, please drop the sand off at my house
2008-02-18 17:38 < jeremyb> NotACow: feel free to make it yourself
2008-02-18 17:38 < mavhc> develop is such a stupid term, why not "program"?
2008-02-18 17:38 < jeremyb> NotACow: where are you?
2008-02-18 17:38 < NotASpy> how goes the Java MediaWiki thing, NotACow ?
2008-02-18 17:39 < NotACow> NotASpy: it's on hiatus
2008-02-18 17:39 < mavhc> slowly, zing!
2008-02-18 17:39 < AppleBoy> such as, delphine should be kept from being able to manage wikimania as she's a horrible leader. even made a page at one point explaining all of it
2008-02-18 17:39 < NotACow> NotASpy: i haven't been able to get into the zone in quite a long time.
2008-02-18 17:39 < AppleBoy> discuss
2008-02-18 17:39 < NotACow> mayne you should make a "!drama" thingy
2008-02-18 17:40 < Demi> mavhc - it's insufficiently hoity-toity, and it allows people who don't write programs to develop things
2008-02-18 17:40 * NotACow thinks snowolf is just trying to impose his view of the world on everyone else.
2008-02-18 17:40 < AppleBoy> oh come on, discuss it!
2008-02-18 17:40 < Demi> bang-op has some function, bang-admin is just annoying
2008-02-18 17:40 < Pilotguy_aw> yay for intelligent and humorous trollege!
2008-02-18 17:40 * Snowolf actually is trying to watch Top Gear without being pinged :P
2008-02-18 17:41 < Pilotguy> Snowolf
2008-02-18 17:41 < NotACow> if you don't want to be pinged, TURN OFF THE PINGER
2008-02-18 17:41 < Demi> people who need help--with all kinds of problems--should state their problem and get help; non-admins can be knowledgeable and helpful, too
2008-02-18 17:41 < Demi> bang-admin is a form of asking to ask
2008-02-18 17:41 < shimgray> me, I never turned it on
2008-02-18 17:41 < Demi> and should be discouraged
2008-02-18 17:41 < NotACow> Demi: but admins are inherently better than non-admins
2008-02-18 17:41 < Pilotguy> O RLY?!?!?!?!
2008-02-18 17:41 < NotACow> Demi: otherwise they'd be admins too!
2008-02-18 17:42 < Demi> bang-op is relevant to chanop activities that might be currently occuring--it serves a function (but it's slightly silly because so abusable)
2008-02-18 17:42 < Demi> NotACow - of course
2008-02-18 17:42 * Pilotguy gives Demi a gold star
2008-02-18 17:43 < NotACow> Demi: you can't go cheapening the effort that these admins went through to get their shiny admin badges.
2008-02-18 17:43 < mavhc> +v known useful people, who can then summon the ops
2008-02-18 17:43 < kibble> mavhc: what?
2008-02-18 17:44 < NotACow> mavhc: ooh, more shiny badges!
2008-02-18 17:44 < mavhc> indeed
2008-02-18 17:44 < NotACow> wikipedia needs more shiny badges
2008-02-18 17:44 < mavhc> things don't work without a reputation system
2008-02-18 17:45 < shimgray> NotACow: hey, some of us spent whole minutes learning the secret handshake
2008-02-18 17:45 < NotACow> mavhc: not that wikipedia has one
2008-02-18 17:45 < Demi> we ought to have enough chanops that one is more or less paying attention all the time
2008-02-18 17:45 * cremepuff222 nods.
2008-02-18 17:45 < NotACow> Demi: chanops have to be politically reliable these days
2008-02-18 17:45 < mavhc> indeed again, and it should be automatic really
2008-02-18 17:45 * cremepuff222 is politically reliable.
2008-02-18 17:46 < Pilotguy> Didn't take me long at all to learn it ;)
2008-02-18 17:46 < NotACow> Demi: limits the number of available candidates in an environment when IRC itself is viewed as political suspect
2008-02-18 17:46 < mavhc> are you now, or have you ever been a member of #communism?
2008-02-18 17:46 < Pilotguy> MOAR SHININESS PLZ
2008-02-18 17:46 < cremepuff222> What's wrong with communism?
2008-02-18 17:47 < NotACow> cremepuff222: smells funny
2008-02-18 17:47 < cremepuff222> :-)
2008-02-18 17:48 < privatemusings> g'day folks.....
2008-02-18 17:50 < jeremyb> Demi: umm... how about blocking/deletion?
2008-02-18 17:50 < jeremyb> oh, i was in scrollback
2008-02-18 17:51 < mavhc> it can only be successfully implemented by robots
2008-02-18 17:51 < Demi> jeremyb - ummm... how about it?
2008-02-18 17:52 * Roof_Cat watches Attic_Cat

2008-02-18 17:54 < LOUD_CAT> BECAUSE THIS IS A CAT-FRIENDLY CHANNEL
2008-02-18 17:54 < NotASpy> Scarian: the channel used to be run by a lonely old woman who collected cats, she left but forgot to take her cats with her.
2008-02-18 17:54 < Universe_Cat> definitely yes
