2008-01-13 18:50 < Gary_Kirk> How is Chicago?
2008-01-13 18:50 < CableModem> of course you have those overcast days
2008-01-13 18:51 < CableModem> but those dont count.
2008-01-13 18:51 < bumm13> cold?
2008-01-13 18:51 < bumm13> that's a funny thought ;)
2008-01-13 18:51 < CableModem> Chicago is doing alright, it recovered from a cold.
2008-01-13 18:51 < bumm13> it's 48 F and sunny locally at this hour
2008-01-13 18:51 < Gary_Kirk> What about in August?
2008-01-13 18:54 < Mike_H> Chicago in August is hot.
2008-01-13 18:54 < Mike_H> Highs in the 80s
2008-01-13 18:54 < Mike_H> but then again, most of the United States is either in the 80s or 90s in August.
2008-01-13 18:54 < Gary_Kirk> Farenheit I hope. lol.
2008-01-13 18:55 < Mike_H> No, Celsius
2008-01-13 18:55 < Mike_H> we are all dead
2008-01-13 18:56 < bumm13> heh
2008-01-13 18:56 < Gary_Kirk> 80 F = 26.6 C
2008-01-13 18:56 < Mike_H> Oh, honey, when I said 80s
2008-01-13 18:56 < bumm13> given that 100 C is the boiling point of water :P
2008-01-13 18:56 < Mike_H> I did not mean 80.
2008-01-13 18:56 < Mike_H> I meant like 87.
2008-01-13 18:56 < Gary_Kirk> according to The Google
2008-01-13 18:56 < Gary_Kirk> 30.5 then
2008-01-13 18:56 < Gary_Kirk> I say
2008-01-13 18:57 < Mike_H> The average highs and lows for Chicago in August are
2008-01-13 18:57 < Mike_H> 83/65
2008-01-13 18:58 < Gary_Kirk> That's nice then. I assume the Hilton has air con
2008-01-13 18:58 < Gary_Kirk> or a bath
2008-01-13 18:58 < CableModem> what hotel doesnt have air conditioning
2008-01-13 18:58 < CableModem> >.>
2008-01-13 18:58 < Mike_H> Tampa's climate is subtropical, with hot summer days and a threat of winter frost only about every 2-3 years. Highs usually range between 65 and 95 ‹F (18 and 35 ‹C) year round. Surprisingly to some, Tampa's official recorded high has never hit 100 ‹F (38 ‹C) - the all-time record high temperature is 99 ‹F (37 ‹C), recorded on June 5, 1985.[24]
2008-01-13 18:58 < Xihix> whats happened?
2008-01-13 18:58 < Gary_Kirk> a place in Venice I once went to?
2008-01-13 18:58 < CableModem> lol
2008-01-13 18:58 < Mike_H> Gary_Kirk: Hiltons always have A/C.
2008-01-13 18:58 < Mike_H> That's why they're Hiltons.
2008-01-13 18:58 < Mike_H> In America it's actually very rare for a hotel anywhere to not have A/C.
2008-01-13 18:59 < Mike_H> even like a Motel 6 or a Days Inn.
2008-01-13 18:59 < Xihix> Mike_H, your name reminds me of Mike Huckabee. Please change it.
2008-01-13 18:59 < bumm13> Xihix: ...
2008-01-13 18:59 < Mike_H> Xihix, your name reminds me of someone who begged people to review his GAs. Please change it.
2008-01-13 18:59 < Pilotguy> CableModem- There was actually a 4-star hotel in Toronto that didn't have A/C
2008-01-13 18:59 < CableModem> o_o;
2008-01-13 18:59 < Xihix> i c wut u did thar

2008-01-13 19:00 < Mike_H> Flatotel Hotels are a chain of apartment-style luxury hotels. The flagship Flatotel is located on West 152nd Street in Upper Manhattan, and opened in 1985.
2008-01-13 19:00 < bumm13> I stayed at a decent one near Orlando that had swamp coolers in its rooms

2008-01-13 19:00 * Pilotguy sets Xihix on fire
2008-01-13 19:00 < Mike_H> bumm13: I just love the hotels that don't get maintenance a lot
2008-01-13 19:00 < Mike_H> and their signs say they have "COLOR TV"
2008-01-13 19:00 < Pilotguy> CableModem- indeed

2008-01-13 19:01 * CableModem steals your tires
2008-01-13 19:01 < Pilotguy> Mike_H- There's plenty of those in Lumberton
2008-01-13 19:01 < CableModem> My room only has b/w TV
2008-01-13 19:01 < bumm13> Mike_H: not maintained a lot, or possibly just seedy :x
2008-01-13 19:01 < CableModem> so maybe I should get colour tv and put a neon sign on it
2008-01-13 19:01 < CableModem> bumm13: what is meant by seedy
2008-01-13 19:01 < Pilotguy> Knights Inn Budget Inn Best Value Inn Rodeway Motel...
2008-01-13 19:01 < CableModem> do lots of weeds grow there?
2008-01-13 19:02 < bumm13> the product of certain seeds are probably smoked at them :P
2008-01-13 19:02 < Mike_H> "Old Folks at Home," also known by the words of its first line, "(Way Down Upon the) Swanee River," is a song written in 1851 by composer Stephen Foster, to be performed by the New York performing troupe Christy's Minstrels.
2008-01-13 19:02 < Mike_H> It has been the official state song of Florida since 1935.[1] It will be retired in January 2008 and replaced with the winner of an online contest.[2]
2008-01-13 19:02 < bumm13> (don't forget dirty needles)

2008-01-13 19:03 < Mike_H> bumm13: Currently Florida does not have a state song
2008-01-13 19:03 < bumm13> a gigantic metropolis of about 22,000
2008-01-13 19:03 < Pilotguy> (O)
2008-01-13 19:03 < bumm13> Mike_H: really?
2008-01-13 19:03 < Mike_H> yeah, read what I copied
2008-01-13 19:03 < Xihix> So, how long has it been since one of you has seen a female nipple?

2008-01-13 19:06 < NotACow> mmm
2008-01-13 19:06 < NotACow> does wikipedia have an articel about the Spotted Viper? :)
2008-01-13 19:07 < CableModem> o_O
2008-01-13 19:07 < mavhk> well an unspotted viper would be hard to document
2008-01-13 19:08 < Stormscape> Biggest anticlimax in history, period: Alexander the Great dying of a cold. Possibly only eclipsed by Attila the Hun's "death-by-nosebleed"
2008-01-13 19:08 < bumm13> Stormscape: I thought there were multiple theories as to how Alexander died?
2008-01-13 19:13 < Cyrius> "Alexander died after twelve years of constant military campaigning, possibly as a result of malaria, poisoning, typhoid fever, viral encephalitis or the consequences of alcoholism."
2008-01-13 19:19 < bumm13> hiya wmarsh
2008-01-13 19:19 < wmarsh> good evening

2008-01-13 19:20 < bedpan> is wikipedia really involved with Ubuntu and the shocking newsrelease?
2008-01-13 19:20 < bumm13> shocking newsrelease?
2008-01-13 19:20 < bumm13> haha
2008-01-13 19:20 < mavhk> sounds exciting

2008-01-13 19:21 < wmarsh> is this like Open Source joke night?
2008-01-13 19:21 < Dtobias> NotACow: Maybe a Vindshield Viper, though.

2008-01-13 19:22 < Cyrius> not a joke
2008-01-13 19:22 < party> this is funny
2008-01-13 19:33 < Mike_H> Beverly Johnson (born October 13, 1952) is a former American supermodel.
2008-01-13 19:33 < Mike_H> Beverly Johnson is one of the first black models in history and rose to fame as the first African-American cover model of the American Vogue in August 1974. The cover was shot by Francesco Scavullo.
2008-01-13 19:33 < Mike_H> fabulous.
2008-01-13 19:34 < Dtobias> Mike_H: What *is* it with you and supermodels, anyway? You can just smell all those feminine hormones oozing from your forum avatar.
2008-01-13 19:35 < Mike_H> Dtobias: I didn't used to be like this before I discovered America's Next Top Model.
2008-01-13 19:35 < Mike_H> It's like crack.
2008-01-13 19:35 < Mike_H> I'm addicted to supermodels and fashion now.
2008-01-13 19:35 < mavhk> those that can't blog
2008-01-13 19:35 < Mike_H> Dtobias: And as for my avatar, my favorite one is the one on the right
2008-01-13 19:35 < Mike_H> [[Mel Rose]]
2008-01-13 19:36 < Dtobias> Try to get a freely-licensed picture of her... there still isn't one in the article.
2008-01-13 19:36 < Mike_H> Dtobias: Yeah, I know
2008-01-13 19:36 < Mike_H> I'm not in San Francisco though.
2008-01-13 19:36 < Dtobias> Stalk her!
2008-01-13 19:36 < Mike_H> I may have to ask Brion to do that.
2008-01-13 19:36 < Mike_H> If he would.
2008-01-13 19:36 < Mike_H> He probably wouldn't want to be bothered. ;)
2008-01-13 19:36 < Dtobias> No, don't *really* stalk anyone...
2008-01-13 19:37 < Mike_H> Dtobias: Oh, damn.
2008-01-13 19:37 < Mike_H> Melissa Rose Bickerstaff (born February 6, 1983), who now goes by the model name Mel Rose, is an American fashion model based in San Francisco, California,[4] and signed to Storm Model Management.[2]
2008-01-13 19:38 < Mike_H> Dtobias: It's a very good agency she's signed to
2008-01-13 19:38 < Mike_H> Cindy Crawford, Kate Moss and Alek Wek are also working with Storm.
2008-01-13 19:38 < Dtobias> Go work for the new WMF office, and you could have an excuse to get there.
2008-01-13 19:38 < bumm13> gawd, Kate Moss
2008-01-13 19:38 < bumm13> San Francisco is an expensive place to live
2008-01-13 19:38 < Mike_H> bumm13: My favorite one is Alek Wek. She is like the fiercest man ever to work the runway.
2008-01-13 19:38 < bumm13> heehee
2008-01-13 19:39 < Dtobias> Florida competes well with California in weirdness per capita... and it does it cheaper.
2008-01-13 19:39 < Mike_H> Alek Wek (born April 16, 1977) is a Sudanese supermodel who appeared on the catwalks at the age of 18 in 1995. She is from the Dinka ethnic group in the Sudan, but in 1991 her family fled to Britain to escape the civil war between the Muslim North and the Christian South of the Sudan.
2008-01-13 19:40 < Mike_H> bumm13: In the face, Alek Wek totally looks like Florida
2008-01-13 19:40 < Mike_H> the mom from Good Times.
2008-01-13 19:42 < Mike_H> bumm13: The name "Alek Wek" means "Black Spotted Cow" in the Dinka language
2008-01-13 19:42 < Mike_H> well, they got one out of three right
2008-01-13 19:43 < Dtobias> NotABlackSpottedCow
2008-01-13 19:43 < Cyrius> oh god, no more "NotA" handles
2008-01-13 19:43 < Mike_H> How did that even start? It's not funny.
2008-01-13 19:43 < Cyrius> and "The*" sucks too
2008-01-13 19:44 < FastLizard4|busy> Cyrius: If you hadn't said no more NotA's, you probably wouldn't get anymore
2008-01-13 19:44 < Mike_H> Dtobias: But yeah, I don't know why I'm so into Top Model. I had no interest in models or fashion before watching this show.
2008-01-13 19:44 < Mike_H> I used to just watch soaps.
2008-01-13 19:44 < Cyrius> FastLizard4|busy: doesn't matter either way, nobody cares what I think
2008-01-13 19:45 * FormentarHome is now known as NotAGuyWithANotANick
2008-01-13 19:46 < Mike_H> But then again, a lot of people don't understand that I watch TV to get away from the real world. I don't want to be enriched mentally or otherwise by television. To me, that is not its role.
2008-01-13 19:46 < Mike_H> Top Model is pure trashy goodness with girls bitching and wearing Chanel and a gay orange man with bad frosted hair telling them to give "more oomph" and "work the fierceness dammit!"
2008-01-13 19:47 < Mike_H> It's definitely not Masterpiece Theatre.
2008-01-13 19:47 < Cyrius> meh, I question your taste in entertainment as entertainment
2008-01-13 19:47 < Mike_H> That's because I don't go for high-brow in entertainment.
2008-01-13 19:48 < bumm13> like Judge Judy?
2008-01-13 19:48 < Mike_H> I don't watch that anymore
2008-01-13 19:48 < Cyrius> I just don't see the entertainment value at all
2008-01-13 19:48 < Mike_H> but my mom loves all the judge shows
2008-01-13 19:48 < Mike_H> Cyrius: Girls living in a house always leads to confrontations and PMS and yelling and just lots of fun for the viewer
2008-01-13 19:48 * Cyrius doesn't find that fun as a viewer
2008-01-13 19:48 < Mike_H> It's voyeurism plus the added effect of "God, I'm glad I'm not them"
2008-01-13 19:50 * soufron_ hello
2008-01-13 19:51 < Mike_H> Cyrius: Reality TV is not for everyone
2008-01-13 19:51 < Mike_H> I've found that there are usually no casual viewers of reality TV.
2008-01-13 19:51 < Mike_H> You either LOVE it or you HATE it.
2008-01-13 19:51 < Cyrius> it's not even real =O
2008-01-13 19:51 < Mike_H> Oh, viewers realize that
2008-01-13 19:51 < bumm13> do they?
2008-01-13 19:51 < Mike_H> again, we're not watching it for real reality.
2008-01-13 19:51 < bumm13> :p
2008-01-13 19:51 < Mike_H> It's TV.
2008-01-13 19:51 < Mike_H> We don't expect it to be totally real.
2008-01-13 19:51 < bumm13> *you* realize that, but not everyone is you
2008-01-13 19:51 < mavhk> so it's like normal tv, except with bad acting, dialog, scripts, plot, lighting, music....
2008-01-13 19:52 < Mike_H> Please, everyone who watches Top Model realizes it's not about finding the best model.
2008-01-13 19:52 < bumm13> it's about........wasting film! ;)
2008-01-13 19:52 < Mike_H> mavhk: Reality TV is unscripted. They may be in contrived situations but the stuff they say, that's all them
2008-01-13 19:52 < bumm13> (and wasting satellite transponder time)
2008-01-13 19:52 < Mike_H> I mean, really, who could script Bianca yelling at Saleisha, "CHECK YO THIGHS OUT IN DA MIRRAH"?
2008-01-13 19:52 < bumm13> :P
2008-01-13 19:53 < mavhk> it's just scripted in the editting room
2008-01-13 19:54 < Mike_H> yeah, basically
2008-01-13 19:54 < mavhk> the only good thing about reality tv is spoof reality tv
2008-01-13 19:56 < Mike_H> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=49_BGQ_X0ik
2008-01-13 19:56 < bumm13> I think my issue with such TV shows is that it's a jarring reminder of much of the collective mentality of Americans nowadays
2008-01-13 19:57 < Mike_H> bumm13: Tyra Banks cries
2008-01-13 19:57 < Alkivar> wow
2008-01-13 19:57 < Mike_H> click
2008-01-13 19:57 < Alkivar> Dallas lost to NY
2008-01-13 19:57 < mavhk> every country has their version of jerry springer, only americans sell their version abroad
2008-01-13 19:57 < Alkivar> 21 to 17
2008-01-13 19:57 < Alkivar> the NFL is full of surprises this post season
2008-01-13 19:57 < bumm13> lol
2008-01-13 19:59 < Mike_H> bumm13: This is probably one of the only times where I believed Tyra's tears
2008-01-13 19:59 < Mike_H> honestly.
2008-01-13 20:00 < Ceiling_Cat> Sarah Conner chronicles starting now
2008-01-13 20:01 < mavhk> it's crap
2008-01-13 20:01 < mavhk> all new shows are crap except pushing daisies, and babylon fields, but that wasn't picked up
2008-01-13 20:03 * NotACow thinks about replacing her talk page with a political screed.
2008-01-13 20:06 < Pilotguy_aw> hehe
2008-01-13 20:06 < wmarsh> yeah this Sarah Conner thing is terrible
2008-01-13 20:07 < mavhk> did they remove the whole school shooting thing from the airing version?
2008-01-13 20:07 < mavhk> that was kinda cool
2008-01-13 20:07 < wmarsh> apparently
2008-01-13 20:08 < mavhk> it's crazy putting a school shooting sequence in your tv show
2008-01-13 20:08 < wmarsh> the acting is pretty terrible
2008-01-13 20:08 < mavhk> by the time it airs it's almost a certaintly some nutter will have shot up a school
2008-01-13 20:13 < phed__> heh
2008-01-13 20:13 < phed__> I wonder
2008-01-13 20:13 < phed__> can channelings be used as a source? :D
2008-01-13 20:13 < phed__> damn, i wish there was a good secondary source on Kryon
2008-01-13 20:14 < phed__> he is really really fascinating, but summarizing his views would be OR
2008-01-13 20:14 < mavhk> so publish your summary
2008-01-13 20:15 < phed__> heh, where?
2008-01-13 20:16 < mavhk> whereever pays the most
2008-01-13 20:17 < phed__> the funny consequences:
2008-01-13 20:17 < phed__> kryon says that anyone can channel kryon. ie everyone can reason by themselves the same things as he says
2008-01-13 20:17 < mavhk> "don't buy my book"
2008-01-13 20:18 < phed__> hehehe
2008-01-13 20:18 < mavhk> however sales of our next song "don't buy this song, tape it off the radio" fell sharply
2008-01-13 20:18 < phed__> .8
2008-01-13 20:18 < phed__> :P
2008-01-13 20:19 < phed__> even tho i find kryon very fascinating I am not willing to buy his books
2008-01-13 20:19 < phed__> 11 books for christ sakes, I rather stick to the publicly available material
2008-01-13 20:20 < phed__> it is also ironic that he is critical of people who use the myth of paranormal stuff in order to write books and earn money
2008-01-13 20:21 < phed__> still, he's my favourite psychic :)
2008-01-13 20:21 < Sfan00> Anyone here know of places that keep old software?
2008-01-13 20:21 < mavhk> how old?
2008-01-13 20:21 < Sfan00> I need to find the retail version of Windows 3.1 for testing something
2008-01-13 20:21 < mavhk> I have an unopened copy of windows 3.0
2008-01-13 20:22 < Sfan00> Is it OEM baged?
2008-01-13 20:22 < Sfan00> It's specfically Windows 3.1 or WfW3.11
2008-01-13 20:22 < Sfan00> I am needing
2008-01-13 20:22 < mavhk> retail
2008-01-13 20:22 * Jeff_G has access to a live copy of WinOS2 that is circa Windows 3.0 or 3.1, running on OS/2 2.x
2008-01-13 20:22 < Mike_H> "Fly, Robin, Fly" is a 1975 song by the German group Silver Convention. It rose to #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in November 1975, staying there for three weeks. It was the second song performed by German citizens and the first song by a German pop group to rise to #1 on the American music charts.
2008-01-13 20:23 < Sfan00> What is WinOS2?
2008-01-13 20:23 < Jeff_G> Microsoft Windows running on IBM OS/2.
2008-01-13 20:23 < Sfan00> The reason for needing to find it is to find some bugs in DosBox :)
2008-01-13 20:23 < mavhk> do you have windows th-th-three eighty-six though?
2008-01-13 20:23 < Jeff_G> Good for a clock and a calculater.
2008-01-13 20:23 < Jeff_G> calculator
2008-01-13 20:23 * Jeff_G is tired
2008-01-13 20:24 < bumm13> interesting curiosity
2008-01-13 20:24 < MrZ-man> Sfan00: http://www.amazon.com/Microsoft-Windows-3-1/dp/B000GGQHKA/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=software&qid=1200273830&sr=1-1
2008-01-13 20:24 < Sfan00> Thank you will take a look
2008-01-13 20:24 < bumm13> available used, naturally
2008-01-13 20:25 < MrZ-man> "Amazon.com Sales Rank: #11,449 in Software"
2008-01-13 20:25 < jtizzle1854> does anyone know why when I have my cell phone in analog mode that really drains the battery 4 to 5 times more than digital mode?
2008-01-13 20:25 < phed__> it's cool that windows 1.0 software still runs (with minor mods)
2008-01-13 20:26 < bumm13> probably due to analog being less energy-efficient
2008-01-13 20:26 < bumm13> (just a guess)
2008-01-13 20:26 < jtizzle1854> ok
2008-01-13 20:26 < Sfan00> bumm1: nothing on the UK Amazon site
2008-01-13 20:26 < Sfan00> and i tried Ebay :(
2008-01-13 20:26 < phed__> that might be right
2008-01-13 20:27 < phed__> Sfan00, i've seen win3.11 circulate in the DosBox community
2008-01-13 20:27 < Sfan00> Legally?
2008-01-13 20:27 < phed__> not really
2008-01-13 20:27 < phed__> depends
2008-01-13 20:27 < phed__> most people who has been around a while own a license ;)
2008-01-13 20:28 < Sfan00> The problem is that you can't transfer an OEM license
2008-01-13 20:28 < Jeff_G> Sfan, do you need the packaging or just the software?
2008-01-13 20:28 < phed__> that doesn't hold in courrt here :)
2008-01-13 20:29 < Sfan00> I need to find somewher to purchase the legal retail commerical license version
2008-01-13 20:29 < mavhk> did they have oem licences like that in win3.1 days?
2008-01-13 20:29 < Sfan00> YES
2008-01-13 20:29 < phed__> mavhk, yes, even in the DOS days
2008-01-13 20:29 < mavhk> so evil, so early
2008-01-13 20:29 < Sfan00> Not really
2008-01-13 20:29 < jtizzle1854> hey does anyone here talked to Leslie_S I talked to her and was just curious and wanted to know her a/s/l that's not any personal information but she wouldn't tell me she asked why and I said just curious and then she stopped speaking to me I'm not a child molester but that's not any personal infomation anyway for a child molester
2008-01-13 20:29 < phed__> mavhk, they pretty much invented the concept
2008-01-13 20:30 * Rinn giggles
2008-01-13 20:30 < Sfan00> jtizzle: RULE ONE OF IRC - DO NOT ASK ASL!
2008-01-13 20:30 < mavhk> I'm on cable anyway
2008-01-13 20:30 < Sfan00> RULE TWO OF IRC - YOU DO NOT ASK FOR ASL
2008-01-13 20:30 < Rinn> asl plz sfan
2008-01-13 20:30 < mavhk> adsl?
2008-01-13 20:30 < phed__> Hay everyone! Let's do a channel ASL
2008-01-13 20:30 < jtizzle1854> why is that a rule?
2008-01-13 20:30 < Messedrocker> a/s/l
2008-01-13 20:30 < Sfan00> Over 21/Indeterminate/ UK
2008-01-13 20:30 < phed__> I remember that from being on IRC in 95 in #teenchat
2008-01-13 20:30 < Sfan00> ;)
2008-01-13 20:30 < jtizzle1854> why's that a rule sfan?
2008-01-13 20:31 < jtizzle1854> why's that a rule sfan?
2008-01-13 20:31 < mavhk> yes/yes/earth
2008-01-13 20:31 < phed__> 16/f/cali
2008-01-13 20:31 < Jeff_G> old enough/yes/New Jersey
2008-01-13 20:32 < Sfan00> Also I will note that many on IRC don't like being hassled by strange men
2008-01-13 20:32 < Rinn> Also while it isn't sufficient info for a child molester, it's certainly helpful to track them down.
2008-01-13 20:32 < FastLizard4|busy> what was that?
2008-01-13 20:32 < mavhk> Sfan00: everyone on irc is strange
2008-01-13 20:32 < Sfan00> Yeah
2008-01-13 20:32 < phed__> asl can be a nice gesture. it does tell you that whoever is a kid :P
2008-01-13 20:32 < Sfan00> I've met 'queens' princesses, Mad Russians
2008-01-13 20:32 < Sfan00> ;)
2008-01-13 20:33 < Sfan00> phed: You only ask ASL in exceptional circumstances
2008-01-13 20:33 < Rinn> Although experienced child molesters will simply idle in whatever channels their target is in and set highlights whenever they talk so that they may glean info.
2008-01-13 20:33 * Rinn coughs
2008-01-13 20:33 < Sfan00> I am glad that the authorities monitor IRC
2008-01-13 20:33 < mavhk> that reminds me, authorities, don't forget to empty my bin
2008-01-13 20:34 < Sfan00> What ever evil lurks in the herats of man - THE SHADOW KNOWS!
2008-01-13 20:34 < phed__> Sfan00: hehe. i usually ask "how old are you" :P
2008-01-13 20:34 * Rinn flags this channel: BOMB, INFIDEL, WHITE HOUSE, ALLAH, TERROR
2008-01-13 20:34 * amidaniel wonders who in here is among the authorities O.o
2008-01-13 20:34 < mavhk> set mode +b
2008-01-13 20:34 < Sfan00> Rinn: it wuicker just to msg !spookserv ;)
2008-01-13 20:34 < Sfan00> *quicker
2008-01-13 20:34 < mavhk> +b, +i, +w, +a, +t
2008-01-13 20:35 < phed__> norway has introduced central surveillance now :(
2008-01-13 20:35 < phed__> without a debate
2008-01-13 20:35 < Sfan00> CCTV or internet?
2008-01-13 20:35 < phed__> Sfan00: internet and phones
2008-01-13 20:36 < mavhk> it's easy to avoid internet tracking, just ssh to somewhere else
2008-01-13 20:36 < Sfan00> Or proxy>
2008-01-13 20:36 < mavhk> and use voip the same way
2008-01-13 20:36 < mavhk> cctv is harder, you could wear a disguise, but they could still follow you home
2008-01-13 20:36 < phed__> well, that's not an excuse to accept it
2008-01-13 20:36 < Sfan00> mavhk : Of coures the UK is much more subtle about the monitoring it does
2008-01-13 20:36 < phed__> cctv does not help against criminality
2008-01-13 20:36 < phed__> research shows that
2008-01-13 20:37 < mavhk> which research?
2008-01-13 20:37 < phed__> was just stated on tv
2008-01-13 20:37 < Sfan00> CCTV lets them think they are doing somehing instead of tackling the real social issues
2008-01-13 20:37 < Sfan00> or paying actual plods :)
2008-01-13 20:37 < mavhk> what caused the real social issues?
2008-01-13 20:37 < phed__> yeah, which is why I am happy to see a paradigm shift occuring in norwegian oplitics
2008-01-13 20:38 < Sfan00> Povety
2008-01-13 20:38 < Sfan00> Broken familes
2008-01-13 20:38 < Sfan00> Anti Social youth
2008-01-13 20:38 < mavhk> and what caused those?
2008-01-13 20:38 < phed__> politics
2008-01-13 20:38 < phed__> you know
2008-01-13 20:38 < phed__> politics is the science of sharing
2008-01-13 20:39 < Sfan00> mavhk a the risk of going political ' B***y Thatcher!"
2008-01-13 20:39 < Sfan00> ;)
2008-01-13 20:39 < phed__> and when politics fails, it puts people in stressful positions
2008-01-13 20:39 < phed__> and stress causes social illness
2008-01-13 20:39 < mavhk> Sfan00: you have to react to worldwide situations though
2008-01-13 20:39 < mavhk> can't stay the same
2008-01-13 20:40 < phed__> Sfan00, the new trend in politics here is "knowledge based politics"
2008-01-13 20:40 < phed__> Sfan00, the 2007 budget was awesome. pretty much every single point was underscored with science
2008-01-13 20:40 < phed__> and there was NO debate or criticism
2008-01-13 20:40 < mavhk> what was the old trend? make it up politics?
2008-01-13 20:40 < phed__> yes
2008-01-13 20:40 < Sfan00> phed__: LOL
2008-01-13 20:41 < Sfan00> Inteligent Design is claimed as 'science'
2008-01-13 20:41 < phed__> yes, and?
2008-01-13 20:41 < mavhk> only by retards though?
2008-01-13 20:41 < phed__> it might not be reliable science
2008-01-13 20:41 < phed__> but i do not object to it being called science
2008-01-13 20:41 < Sfan00> Eugenice was once thought of as science
2008-01-13 20:41 < mavhk> doesn't make predictions, not science
2008-01-13 20:41 < Sfan00> *Eugenics
2008-01-13 20:41 < phed__> Sfan00, and the theory of eugenics is still being applied in psychiatry
2008-01-13 20:41 < Sfan00> and was implmented in parts of Scandanavia sadly :(
2008-01-13 20:42 < mavhk> it's only the whole "killing people" thing that's bad
2008-01-13 20:42 < phed__> yepp. it isnt since 2000 we actually cut that part
2008-01-13 20:42 < Sfan00> There were tales of so called 'dissapering-doctors' iirc
2008-01-13 20:42 < mavhk> huamsn are devolving
2008-01-13 20:43 < phed__> mavhk: oh, there is a lot more than "killing people" that is bad
2008-01-13 20:43 < Sfan00> Then what about the Scottish? :) ( me make cheap political joke)
2008-01-13 20:43 < phed__> mavhk: still people who are schizophrenics are told to not have babies in the us, despite empirical evidence
2008-01-13 20:43 < Sfan00> Schizoids aren't genetic
2008-01-13 20:43 < phed__> mavhk: the science used to support that claim is from the 1930s
2008-01-13 20:43 < phed__> Sfan00: that's what wikipedia claims
2008-01-13 20:44 < Sfan00> and most schziophrenic conditon can be controlled with drugs
2008-01-13 20:44 < Sfan00> phed__: It does?
2008-01-13 20:44 < Sfan00> Whats it cite on that?
2008-01-13 20:44 < phed__> Sfan00: drugs are only 10% more effective than placebo
2008-01-13 20:44 < placebo_effect> gah
2008-01-13 20:44 < phed__> Sfan00: studies on genetics
2008-01-13 20:44 < Sfan00> The issue with schizos is training them
2008-01-13 20:44 < Sfan00> to reject the voices...
2008-01-13 20:45 < amidaniel> phed__: What you forget to mention is that placebo's are shockingly effective :)
2008-01-13 20:45 < placebo_effect> gah
2008-01-13 20:45 < phed__> amidaniel: Yeah. that's true. :)
2008-01-13 20:45 < phed__> haha
2008-01-13 20:45 < Sfan00> The problem is that mental health depts often don't actually have the budget to do this kind of treatment
2008-01-13 20:45 < phed__> amidaniel: But they don't have side effects at least
2008-01-13 20:45 < Sfan00> Erm Placebos can have side effects
2008-01-13 20:45 < Sfan00> :)
2008-01-13 20:45 < placebo_effect> thank you
2008-01-13 20:46 < placebo_effect> that dint ping me
2008-01-13 20:46 < phed__> Sfan00: That's a problematic statement. The costs of untreated mental illness is often staggering
2008-01-13 20:46 < phed__> Sfan00: And the introduction of psychosocial treatment of psychosis in norway has been tremendously succesful
2008-01-13 20:47 < phed__> Sfan00: And it is cheaper for society, since the "time to back in work" is much shorter
2008-01-13 20:48 < phed__> Sfan00: the connection between mental illness and medicines is problematic. I've been working on this on wikipedia, but there are so many editors who doesn't beleive this and treats it as POV
2008-01-13 20:48 < phed__> At least an RFC established that my editing was not POV but factually based. Still problematic tho
2008-01-13 20:48 < Sfan00> Well you would be aware of the fact that sometimes physcoactive can aggravate certian conditons
2008-01-13 20:48 < Sfan00> I have to go
2008-01-13 20:48 < Sfan00> It's nearly 2AM
2008-01-13 20:48 < Sfan00> Goodnight
2008-01-13 20:48 < phed__> night
2008-01-13 20:49 < amidaniel> phed__: Well, while I do agree with you, I have to say that WP is probably not the place to make your point
2008-01-13 20:49 < phed__> amidaniel: I am not making a point. I am editing wikipedia to update it to contemptary science
2008-01-13 20:50 < phed__> it is a systemic problem too
2008-01-13 20:50 < phed__> psychiatry has a monopoly on mental illness, especially in the us
2008-01-13 20:51 < phed__> and their perspective is permeats media, law, policies and the common knowledge
2008-01-13 20:51 < phed__> but since 2000 there has been massive changes across the world in the field
2008-01-13 20:52 < phed__> kinda similar to the reaction to anti-psychiatry in the 1970s. it can be thought of as a second wave
2008-01-13 20:52 < Mike_H> <Mike_H> Ooh, I got a large number of supports on my Wikinews accreditation!
2008-01-13 20:52 < Mike_H> <Mike_H> and by a large number, I mean large for Wikinews
2008-01-13 20:52 < placebo_effect> how many is that?
2008-01-13 20:52 < Mike_H> 12
2008-01-13 20:52 < phed__> wikinews accreditation?
2008-01-13 20:52 < placebo_effect> what is that?
2008-01-13 20:53 < Mike_H> It's a vote to become an "accredited journalist" for Wikinews
2008-01-13 20:53 < placebo_effect> congrats!!!
2008-01-13 20:53 < Mike_H> which can get you press perks depending on the event
2008-01-13 20:53 < phed__> amidaniel, but I have constantly to be aware of the fact that some critics of psychiatry are "living" on their criticism
2008-01-13 20:53 < Mike_H> they range from
2008-01-13 20:53 < Mike_H> nothing
2008-01-13 20:53 < Mike_H> to everything
2008-01-13 20:53 < phed__> amidaniel, kinda like some ufo people live on their books, and skeptics live on theirs
2008-01-13 20:54 < Mike_H> placebo_effect: There are about 40 active users or so
2008-01-13 20:54 < Mike_H> so for that amount, 12 is good
2008-01-13 20:54 < placebo_effect> yeah, i wish i was good at writing
2008-01-13 20:54 < placebo_effect> who does wikinews work
2008-01-13 20:54 < Messedrocker> who does wikinews work?

2008-01-13 20:57 < Mike_H> (I changed it on Wikipedia in June 2005)
2008-01-13 20:57 < phed__> how can you change screenname?
2008-01-13 20:57 < Mike_H> You register a new one
2008-01-13 20:57 < phed__> :8
2008-01-13 20:57 < Mike_H> and then have the old edits transferred.
2008-01-13 20:57 < phed__> oh?
2008-01-13 20:57 < Mike_H> yeah
2008-01-13 20:57 < Mike_H> I've just never gotten around to it on Wikinews
2008-01-13 20:58 < phed__> well, the issue is that I would like to case mine differently
2008-01-13 20:58 < phed__> it is cased Benjaminbruheim whilst it should be Benjamin Bruheim :P

2008-01-13 20:58 < Mike_H> I don't see why you can't do that, there's an underscore in the system for the space
2008-01-13 20:58 < Mike_H> so it would be a different name
2008-01-13 20:59 < phed__> how can you transfer edits?
2008-01-13 20:59 < Mike_H> you have to request it
2008-01-13 20:59 < Mike_H> I forget the name of the page

2008-01-13 21:24 < Evercat> nah there is a golf tournament called the Australian Open. Wikipedia says so, so it's probably true
2008-01-13 21:25 * quanticle was watching The Matrix until very recently

2008-01-13 21:27 * UninvitedCompany sighs
2008-01-13 21:27 < Ceiling_Cat> wtf?
2008-01-13 21:27 < quanticle> The359: Meh. The original movie was pretty good
2008-01-13 21:27 < Ceiling_Cat> UC - what is your problem?
2008-01-13 21:27 < quanticle> The359: Its the second and third parts of the trilogy that are poisoning your experience
2008-01-13 21:28 < The359> Not really
2008-01-13 21:28 < The359> It looks like crap nowadays
2008-01-13 21:28 < quanticle> The359: So does Star Wars
2008-01-13 21:28 < The359> No?
2008-01-13 21:28 < quanticle> The359: The original, non-remastered versions?
2008-01-13 21:29 < quanticle> The359: And the Matrix has just about as much plot as Star Wars
2008-01-13 21:29 < The359> it looks aged because of the film itself
2008-01-13 21:29 < The359> not because of the FX
2008-01-13 21:30 < quanticle> The359: Oh, true enough, I guess. Those cell-phones are laughably big by today's standards.
2008-01-13 21:30 < The359> not that
2008-01-13 21:30 < The359> It's just like "People were impressed by this shit?"
2008-01-13 21:31 < quanticle> The359: Its because this "shit", as you call it has been parodied to the moon and back. Hell, even Shrek parodied the matrix
2008-01-13 21:31 < Dtobias> Mike_H: This one's for you: http://www.converse.com/disruption/#/pageant/
2008-01-13 21:31 < The359> no
2008-01-13 21:31 < The359> it just doesn't look good anymore
2008-01-13 21:32 < quanticle> The359: What about it doesn't look good?
2008-01-13 21:32 < The359> the FX, the fights, everything
2008-01-13 21:34 < quanticle> The359: Again, I think that it became too much of a fad. There were *many* *many* movies over the next few years that had the same wire-fu effects, except that they were even more massively overdone.
2008-01-13 21:34 < The359> how has the Star Wars style not a fad?
2008-01-13 21:34 < The359> Or heavily parodied?
2008-01-13 21:36 * FastLizard4|away supports the de-opping of UninvitedCompany for misusing kick
2008-01-13 21:36 < quanticle> The359: Right, but Star Wars is old enough that the parodies have slipped from memory, and only the original stands, in all its glory. Give The Matrix another 20 years, and I think its reputation will have improved.
2008-01-13 21:37 < The359> It has nothing to do with parodies
2008-01-13 21:37 < The359> The film just looks bad
2008-01-13 21:37 < bumm13> everyone has their opinion
2008-01-13 21:37 < The359> Star Wars has always looked impressive
2008-01-13 21:37 * FastLizard4|away likes Star Trek better than Star Wars
2008-01-13 21:39 < quanticle> Heh. Look at this. http://www.nytimes.com/2006/01/08/education/edlife/facebooks.html?_r=1&oref=slogin

But this time, when the campus police showed up, they found 40 students and a table of cake and cookies, all decorated with the word "beer." "We even set up a cake-pong table," a twist on the beer-pong drinking game, he says. "The look on the faces of the cops was priceless." As the coup de grâce, he posted photographs of the

2008-01-13 21:48 < phed__> can somebody review this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arne_N%C3%A6ss#Philosophy_of_science
2008-01-13 21:49 < quanticle> phed__: I see nothing wrong with it.
2008-01-13 21:49 < phed_> sorry, got disconnected
2008-01-13 21:50 < phed_> "unified science" should redirect to "http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vienna_Circle#Unified_science" but I haev no idea how to do this
2008-01-13 21:51 < phed_> weird really, since that is pretty much the ruling definition on science these days
2008-01-13 21:51 < phed_> nevermind
2008-01-13 21:51 < Evercat> phed_ - that philosophy of science bit could be made to make sense but it's currently filled with bad grammar
2008-01-13 21:52 < phed_> :S
2008-01-13 21:52 < Evercat> You didn't write it did you? :-)
2008-01-13 21:52 < phed_> yes I did
2008-01-13 21:52 < phed_> it is a translation of the norwegian wiki
2008-01-13 21:52 < Evercat> hmm
2008-01-13 21:52 < phed_> but it is so damn hard to make good english grammar out of norwegian without losing meaning
2008-01-13 21:53 < phed_> I am intending to source the article when I get the relevant books. But those two paragraphs are self contained, in that they are well defined in the books they mention.
2008-01-13 21:53 < Evercat> Well then I meant to say that it's a well written and easy-to-understand section.
2008-01-13 21:53 < phed_> haha
2008-01-13 21:53 < phed_> it isn't :P
2008-01-13 21:54 < quanticle> Evercat: I think that you'll find that philosophy of science is never easy to understand, no matter how well written it is
2008-01-13 21:54 < Evercat> Well there is that
2008-01-13 21:55 < phed_> hehe
2008-01-13 21:55 < phed_> well, I find arne næss' view on science highly relevant these days
2008-01-13 21:55 < phed_> especially seeing how problematic it is for wikipedia to write articles on science, since the majority pov is that science is a singular body
2008-01-13 21:56 < phed_> and since Arne Næss' view is the majority POV in norway I am quites dismayed at reading articles that state that X is regarded as pseudoscience or whatever
